Kansai debuted “Osaka Winter Camp Screen” digital assumption restoration

Toppan Printing is working on the restoration project of “Osaka Winter Camp” by using digital technology under the guidance and advice of experts in various fields such as history, castle history, art history, and customs history. Last year, the restored folding screen was completed, and a special exhibition “Battle Figure-Mononofu” was held at Tokugawa Art Museum in Nagoya City and Nagoya Horai Bunko from Saturday, July 27th to Sunday, September 8th, 2019. It was exhibited and premiered in “Drawing our brave figure”.

In this summer’s exhibition, in collaboration with Osaka Castle Tenshukaku, the project of the project implemented by Toppan Printing was the “Osaka Winter Team Figure Digital Restoration” digital restoration and “Osaka Summer Team” owned by Osaka Castle Tower. “Screen folding screen” (important cultural property) will be displayed together.

In addition, it was issued on May 4, 1615 (1615) four days before Keicho 20 (1615), when the armor for Yasumura Sanada (Nobushige) and Matabei Goto, who were active in the winter team and the summer team, and Hidetoyo Toyotomi were injured. The materials related to the winter team and summer team, such as the last document of existence and the letter of Jinbo Ono on May 7, 20 Keikei on the day of the final battle of Osaka summer, will be exhibited.

About Osaka winter folding screen restoration project

Toppan Printing has built up the digital coloring process of the six songs and one folding screen by utilizing the knowledge of digital restoration of cultural assets cultivated so far. The reconstruction was completed by digital coloring and hand-finishing, assuming the appearance of the figure by reading the model while obtaining academic research and supervision by an expert.

Toppan Printing is working on digital archiving of real cultural assets and digital reproduction of lost cultural properties in order to pass on valuable cultural properties in Japan and overseas to future generations. So far, we have performed digital reconstruction such as VR reproduction of the Imperial Hotel Light House and Edo Castle castle tower, Claude Monet’s “Water lily and willow reflection” (collected by the National Museum of Western Art) by half of the cloth.

The Hiroshima Museum of Art is hosting the exhibition “ZIPANGU: Contemporary Artists Who Defined the Heisei Era” (November 2, 2024 – December 22, 2024). This showcase brings together works by some of the most prominent figures in Japan’s contemporary art scene, including Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, Makoto Aida, Yoshitomo Nara, Chiharu Shiota, Izumi Kato, Akira Yamaguchi, and Miwa Komatsu. The exhibition has already garnered significant attention, exceeding 10,000 visitors.

HYAKKEI covered the dialogue between contemporary artist Takashi Murakami and Sueo Mizuma, the curator of this exhibition, held at the RIHGA Royal Hotel Hiroshima. We also conducted an exclusive interview with Mr. Mizuma.
