2024.08.26

The Gallery of Japan’s Three Great Uchiwa Fans, designated as a traditional craft, will be held at the shop and gallery at Gora Kalaku, Hakone until 30 September 2024 (Monday). Take a look at the beautiful craftsmanship of Uchiwa fans made in Japan using techniques and skills handed down from ancient times, and enjoy the coolness in your hands.
You can also enjoy a fantastic and cool space with the cool sound of wind chimes and bamboo lights as a summer treat.

Japan's Three Great Uchuwa Galleries

A gallery of Japan’s three main types of Uchiwa, designated as ‘traditional crafts’ by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry: Boshu Uchiwa (Chiba Prefecture), Kyo Uchiwa (Kyoto Prefecture) and Marugame Uchiwa (Kagawa Prefecture).

Uchiwa production involves a number of processes and craftsmen carefully finish each fan by hand. We hope that visitors will have the opportunity to see the beautiful Uchiwa fans that are the result of the craftsmen’s skills in the vicinity, and to introduce them to traditional handicrafts that can be used for a long time in their daily lives.

Sound of wind chimes and illuminated bamboo lanterns

This summer, in the lobby lounge, with its Japanese atmosphere of granite, granite and natural wood, the Odawara cast iron wind chimes, inspired by Odawara lanterns, a necessity for travellers passing through Hakone in the Edo period, and the Mishima wind chimes, handmade glass with a blue-green hue, contain iron sand from the Kano River, which runs through the middle of the Izu Peninsula, and volcanic ash from Mount Fuji and Mount Hakone. Fuji and Hakone, and the soothing sound of wind chimes create a Japanese healing space.

In addition, a total of 62 bamboo balls and 16 bamboo lanterns will be displayed on the Mizu no Terrace, with its cool seasonal scenery and the sound of water, and on the Mori no Terrace, overlooking the majestic Hakone landscape, to create a fantastic illuminated experience from dusk.
