From April 8th (Fri) to May 15th (Sun), 2022, we will hold an exhibition “Equestrian Kings of Taisei and Horses Folding Screen and Matsuura Folding Screen-Cross-border Art-” at Yamato Bunkakan.
In this exhibition, the important cultural property “Equestrian Kings of Kings and Horses” in the Suntory Museum of Art and the national treasure “Matsuura Folding Screen” of the museum will be the center of the art that crosses the boundaries of the eastern and western civilizations and is rooted in each area. Look at various aspects of crafts. Please enjoy the many sculptures that are full of exotic tastes.
Christianity was introduced to Japan in the middle of the 16th century. Music and paintings that directly appeal to people’s sensibilities were used for missionary work. Eventually, some Japanese believers will produce Western musical instruments and Western-style paintings.
The paintings drawn under the guidance of a missionary in a short period of time until the Tokugawa Shogunate adopted a ban on religious affairs are called “early Western-style paintings”, and the representative work is “Taisei King Houjou Zoufu”.
The buds of early Western-style paintings are plucked by the persecution of Christianity, but even so, the women depicted in “Matsuura Fengfu” wear rosaries as necklaces and love Western-style things as if they were playing card games. Such a trend remained persistent.
