Kengo Kuma, who is also known for the design of the National Stadium, which became the main stadium of the Tokyo Olympics as well as the main building, is in charge of the construction of the expanded area. The black-based exterior and the design that incorporates water that reflects the rich nature are also utilized in the extension.
In the existing gallery on the 1st floor of the main building, more than 20 two-dimensional works such as Yayoi Kusama’s “Pumpkin” and “Infinity Net” will be exhibited in two rooms facing through the glass across the basin. In addition to Yoshitomo Nara’s “Your Dog”, Mariko Mori and Kohei Nawa’s three-dimensional works will be exhibited in the open gallery on the second floor overlooking Mt. Yufu.
The three-dimensional works of the open gallery on the 2nd floor of the main building were created according to the land rich in nature while being visited by various people called Yufuin. The time to face the work in the rich nature creates a special experience that can only be experienced here.
