From Saturday 1 February to Thursday 27 March 2025, the Keio Plaza Hotel will host ‘Hinamatsuri at the Hotel – Setsubuku Cuisine Served with Arita Porcelain and Flowery Hina Furnishings’, featuring approximately 5,000 vines and other decorations. This is the 24th year of the Hinamatsuri event, which focuses on hanging ornaments.
Honken kofu vine decorations and Mataro dolls in tan-decoration.
The ‘tsurushi-zukuri’ (hanging ornaments), consisting of approximately 5,000 hand-sewn handicrafts made of old silk cloth in a space five metres wide and two metres deep from a height of approximately three metres, is a good-luck decoration for children to wish them healthy growth.
In the centre of the room is a tiered display of Mataro Ningyo, a long-established doll maker represented by a craftsman who has been recognised by the Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto as the sole legitimate heir of Mokumekomi Ningyo. Visitors can admire the traditional technique of digging narrow grooves in the wooden doll’s body and inserting the ends of cloth to dress the doll in costume.

This exhibition features porcelain ouchiuri-sama and dog-shaped vessels called “inubako”, one of the Hina designs, from the Imari Nabeshima ware production area, which has inherited some of the best pottery techniques in the country.
