The hot spring inn Kai Tsugaru, located in Ōwani Onsen, Aomori Prefecture, will once again host its Tsugaru Nanayuki Kamakura Aperitif event this February, where guests can enjoy Oma tuna and local sake in a traditional snow hut.
The Seven Snow Kamakura Floating in the Snowy Landscape
During winter, the Tsugaru Shiki no Mizubata (Tsugaru Four Seasons Water Garden) is surrounded by trees crowned with pure white snow caps. In the centre of this water garden, originally a pond, our staff handcraft each unique “Nanayuki Kamakura” snow hut. As dusk falls, the outer walls of the kamakura illuminate with the ‘Tsugaru Nanayuki Kogin Illumination,’ featuring the traditional Tsugaru craft of kogin stitching in a seven-snowflake pattern, casting a fantastical scene within the snowy landscape.
Seven ways to enjoy Oma tuna. Savour the day's snow with amuse-bouches and local sake.
This project presents the French culinary tradition of apéritif with a distinctive Tsugaru twist. The “Seven Snows Amuse” is a single dish lavishly featuring Oma tuna, expressing the “Seven Snows” – powdered snow, cotton snow, granular snow, water snow, coarse-grained snow, frozen snow, and hard snow – through seven distinct cooking methods. Discover new facets of Oma tuna through varied cooking techniques and ingredient pairings. Accompanying it is an Aomori sake selected daily, inspired by the type of snow falling that day. Savour this once-in-a-lifetime pairing.
Light Art by Kogin Designers: Tsugaru Nanayuki Kogin Illuminations
The water garden and snow hut are illuminated by the “Tsugaru Seven Snow Kogin Lanterns”, designed by kogin designer Iemasa Yamahata. Each of the seven lanterns features entirely distinct colours and patterns, employing the “modoko” – the foundational motif of Tsugaru’s traditional kogin stitching craft – to depict snowflakes. As dusk falls, these multicoloured kogin lanterns illuminate the snowy landscape, vividly enhancing the moments before dinner.
