We have upgraded the Chourakukan original butter sand, which was popular last year, this year as well. The pastry chef and sommelier repeated trial and error to use “Madeira wine” selected according to the taste of butter sand. Butter sand with Western liquor creates an adult’s home time during the long autumn nights.
A set of 6 flavors, “plain x raisin” and “cocoa x white fig”. “Plain x raisins” is a plain sable with butter cream and sultana raisins, and “Cocoa x white chijiku” is a cocoa sable with butter cream and white chijiku.
As the cream and fruit become familiar with each day, you can enjoy the changing taste slowly.

・Two types of dried fruits, sultana raisins and white figs, which have been carefully soaked in Madeira wine with rich sweetness and mellow fragrance for over a week.
Chourakukan’s butter sand is particular about the balance of the three flavors of cream, sable, and fruit. Thick sable and rich butter cream with a satisfying taste are finished with a refreshing aftertaste of fruit with Madeira wine.
If you eat it cold, it will have a refreshing taste, and if you eat it after returning it to room temperature, you will feel the rich taste of butter and the aroma of fruits.
Madeira in Portugal, along with Port in Portugal and Sherry in Spain, is one of the three fortified wines in the world. Madeira wine is fortified with alcohol and then heated to create a unique fragrant flavor and an old vintage that can be preserved for over 100 years.
This time, considering the balance with butter cream and sable, we are using Vinhos Barbato “Madeira Veramar Reserva 5 Years”.

December sees the arrival of a number of Christmas breads. The Snowman with his cute smiling face is a sweet loaf with two different flavours: pudding cream and chocolate cream. It is a heartwarming treat with flavours that both children and adults can enjoy.

The Hiroshima Museum of Art is hosting the exhibition “ZIPANGU: Contemporary Artists Who Defined the Heisei Era” (November 2, 2024 – December 22, 2024). This showcase brings together works by some of the most prominent figures in Japan’s contemporary art scene, including Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, Makoto Aida, Yoshitomo Nara, Chiharu Shiota, Izumi Kato, Akira Yamaguchi, and Miwa Komatsu. The exhibition has already garnered significant attention, exceeding 10,000 visitors.
HYAKKEI covered the dialogue between contemporary artist Takashi Murakami and Sueo Mizuma, the curator of this exhibition, held at the RIHGA Royal Hotel Hiroshima. We also conducted an exclusive interview with Mr. Mizuma.
The discussions centered on the aspirations behind the ZIPANGU exhibition and offered forward-looking insights, not only into Japan’s art world but also into the rediscovery of value within Japanese culture by its people.
