Sunshine Aquarium is holding a special exhibition called ‘Midnight Creatures’, which focuses on creatures that are active at night and in the dark. The exhibition runs until Monday 24 November. The Yako mushrooms and fireflies are also on display for a limited time only. Don’t miss these fantastic and precious exhibits!
Adult fireflies have a lifespan of around one week and can be seen glowing until mid-June, after which they are replaced by new individuals. It is said that one reason adult fireflies glow is to facilitate mating.
Depending on the conditions, the exhibition may be suspended, or the fireflies may not glow.
Hotaria parvula (species of firefly)
The Yacoubutake mushroom is small, with an umbrella diameter of 1–3 cm, and it grows mainly in clusters in tropical rainforests. It usually only forms an umbrella for about two weeks, and its luminescent period is very short at just two to three days. The reason for its light emission remains unclear, making it a very mysterious mushroom.
Silent hunters gliding silently through the darkness Red-footed Newt Owl
It can fly silently through pitch-dark forests at night to avoid detection by its prey.
Its left and right ear holes are at different heights, and it uses the difference in the way they hear sound to accurately locate prey in the darkest forests and ensure that even the smallest animal is caught.
Ultrasonic skills to detect obstacles Egyptian russet bats
They use primitive echolocation, emitting ultrasonic waves and locating objects by their reflections, to fly smoothly through pitch-dark caves.
Their staple food is fruit and flowers, and they fly around at night looking for them.
Extinct in nature! Rare sligo salamander.
The giant salamander is the world’s largest amphibian, with some specimens living for up to 60 years in captivity. The specimen on display at the Sunshine Aquarium arrived in 1999. During the day, they tend to remain hidden and motionless, but at night they begin to move, using their large mouths to swallow their prey whole.
