Menoya Co Ltd has launched Ishiyoe, a purely domestic artwork in which masterpieces of Japanese art are carved into crystals.
The first two works, Fugaku Sanjurokkei Kanagawa-oki Namiura by Katsushika Hokusai and The Wind and Thunder Gods by Ogata Korin, will be on display for the first time at the Tokyo Solamachi shop in Tokyo Skytree Town from 23 May 2025, and are available for order via the company’s e-commerce site.
What is Ishiyoe?
Ishiyoe is ‘crystal art’ in which masterpieces are engraved from the inside using laser engraving, which until now was considered impossible, on high-purity synthetic crystals used for optical equipment. The entire process, from materials to processing and finishing, is carried out in Japan, making it a completely purely domestic craft.
Laser engraving on synthetic quartz crystals is technically challenging, but recent innovations in domestic technology have made it possible. The laser engraving is not on the front or the back of the crystal plate, but inside the crystal plate, giving it a three-dimensional effect, as if it were floating.
Made of natural Japanese cedar, processed in Japan.
It protects the quartz plate and brings the painting to life beautifully. The special shape designed exclusively for Ishiyoe allows the top panel to be fitted into the grooves on the back and displayed as it is. Enjoy the scent of natural cedar as well.
