Liberta Co., Ltd. will conduct the ‘Shingū Premium Tour: Sacred Flames of Kumano’ (hereinafter referred to as this tour) from Thursday 5th to Saturday 7th February 2026. This tour offers deep immersion in the ‘National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property: Otō Festival’ held in Shingū City, Wakayama Prefecture.
This tour represents a special programme of responsible travel that respects local culture. Conceived over four years, it aims to reach the heart of the Otō Matsuri, an event previously considered difficult to commercialise for tourism. Following the confirmation of the 2026 tour, we are now accepting final applications for a [Special Price Quota] to facilitate future promotion.
The Otō Festival
The Torch Festival held annually on 6th February at Kamikura Shrine in Shingū City is a sacred ritual boasting over 1,400 years of history. On the day, participants known as “Noboriko” (Ascending Children), clad in white robes and holding torches, dash down the steep 538-step stone staircase built into sheer cliffs. The sight of thousands of flames descending the mountain, floating in the darkness, is revered as the “Descending Dragon”. This wild yet sacred spectacle continues to overwhelm visitors.
Immerse yourself in the region and experience its spirit over two nights and three days
Participants in this tour are not mere spectators. They share in this sacred moment as “travellers of inheritance”, understanding the true meaning of the sacred rites and passing on their spirit to the next generation. This unique itinerary offers participants exclusive access to the very heart of the Mikoshi Festival – including interaction with female straw sandal artisans and special guided access to private rites not normally open to the public.
