‘Jozankei Natsu Tōro 2026’ – an event illuminating Jozankei Onsen in Sapporo, Hokkaido, with ‘traditional Japanese lighting’ to mark the 160th anniversary of the hot spring’s discovery

2026.07.27

Naked Inc. is overseeing the production of the lighting displays for the entire hot spring town as part of ‘Jozankei Natsu Tōro 2026’, a new walking light festival held at Jozankei Onsen in Sapporo, Hokkaido, to mark the 160th anniversary of the hot spring’s discovery.
This magical light experience, which envelops the entire hot spring town, is running from Monday 1 June to Saturday 31 October 2026.

A complete revamp of an event that has run for 10 years. A new ‘Japanese-style illuminations’ walking tour to celebrate the 160th anniversary of Jozankei Onsen

Marking a new chapter for Jozankei Onsen as it celebrates the 160th anniversary of the discovery of its hot springs, the event has been completely revamped. It has been reborn as ‘Jozankei Natsu Tōro’, a brand-new walking tour event designed to be enjoyed whilst strolling through the entire spa town.

This event creates a fantastical atmosphere that is both nostalgic and fresh by decorating various locations throughout the town with ‘traditional Japanese lighting’ using paper lanterns and andon lamps. By combining light displays, projection mapping and a fusion of lighting and mist technology tailored to the characteristics of each spot—such as the park where the source of the Toyohira River springs forth and historic temples—the event invites guests, whether fresh from a bath or after dinner, to enjoy a special evening stroll.

Four illuminated spots that bring colour to the hot spring town

Iwato Kannon Hall

The Iwato Kannon Hall stands quietly, bearing witness to 90 years of history. This space, imbued with prayers for peace, is gently enveloped by some 100 paper lanterns and beautiful lighting that highlights the hall’s intricate details, creating a solemn atmosphere bathed in light.

Dingshan Spring Park

A park that recreates the original landscape where Misumi Jōzan first encountered the hot springs. In a space where some 200 lanterns cast a magical glow, you can enjoy a luxurious moment bathed in light whilst soaking your feet in the ‘foot bath’, which draws water from the spring that bubbles up from the Toyohira River.

Ashifureai Taro no Yu

A foot bath spot that welcomes visitors at the entrance to Jozankei Onsen. Whilst soaking comfortably in the warm water, you can enjoy a beautiful light and video display—exclusive to this location and created by Naked—which harmonises with the surrounding nature and the space itself.

Jozankei Shrine

This historic shrine enshrines Bisen Jozan, the founder of Jozankei Onsen. In addition to the 100 lanterns that solemnly illuminate the approach, dynamic projection mapping onto the main hall, combined with state-of-the-art lighting and mist effects, creates an otherworldly and mystical atmosphere.

Eighty Years After the War: A Reflection on the Preciousness of Ordinary Life YUKIKAZE – In Theaters Nationwide from August 15, 2025

“To Return Alive, To Bring Others Home Alive”

Opening nationwide on August 15, 2025—marking eighty years since the end of World War II—YUKIKAZE is a feature film based on the true story of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) destroyer Yukikaze, a vessel that rescued countless lives amid the horrors of war. A press screening was held in advance at the Sony Pictures screening room.

The destroyer Yukikaze, which served throughout the Pacific War, was renowned for rescuing numerous sailors thrown into the sea during fierce naval battles, surviving to the end of the war virtually unscathed. It earned the legendary moniker “the lucky ship.” This film brings to life the ship’s heroic journey, alongside the lives of those who persevered through one of the most turbulent eras in modern history.

Leading the cast is Yutaka Takenouchi as Captain Kazutoshi Terasawa—a fictional amalgamation inspired by the real-life captains of Yukikaze. Hiroshi Tamaki portrays Petty Officer First Class Kohei Hayase. Supporting roles are delivered by an ensemble of acclaimed actors including Daiken Okudaira, Rena Tanaka, Kanji Ishimaru, and Toru Masuoka. Kiichi Nakai delivers a commanding performance as Vice Admiral Seiichi Itō, the Second Fleet Commander of the IJN who met his fate aboard the battleship Yamato.

In today’s world, once again shaken by division and violence, YUKIKAZE poses an urgent question to those of us living in the peace that others fought to protect: Are we once again treading the path of past mistakes? As collective memory of the war fades, this film becomes ever more vital—a call to reflect on the true value of peace.
