Held a special exhibition of Hisui Sugiura, which is engraved in the history of modern Japanese design

2021.09.12

A special exhibition of Hisui Sugiura, known as a pioneer of modern design in Japan, “Design that opens the era of Hisui Sugiura” will be held from Saturday, September 11th to Sunday, November 14th, 2021 at the Museum of Tobacco and Salt. To do.

Hisui Sugiura, who was active as a designer

Hisui Sugiura decided to pursue his career as a designer because he was fascinated by the Art Nouveau style designs brought by Kuroda Seiki, a Western-style painter who returned to France while attending school.

Hisui Sugiura was commissioned by the Mitsukoshi Kuremono store in 1908, after which he served as the first chief of the design department. Until he left the company in 1934, he was in charge of designing posters and PR magazine covers for 27 years. In addition to Mitsukoshi, he has worked on posters for various companies and packages such as “Hibiki” and “Hikari” for cigarettes. Many can be said to be the origin of what is now called “graphic design”.

"Hibiki" and "Hikari" of tobacco

This exhibition consists of four chapters, centering on the collection of the Ehime Museum of Art in Hisui Sugiura’s hometown, as well as representative works such as posters, bindings, magazine covers, package designs, and collections of designs, as well as the background of his creations. We will also introduce sketches, photos, and beloved items to know. From the works of the Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts to the designs of his later years, about 300 works will be exhibited in the previous and subsequent periods, following the footsteps of Hisui Sugiura.
