Shinwa Auction Co.(Representative: Yoichiro Kurata) held a special auction at the Marunouchi Building Hall in Marunouchi, Tokyo, on Saturday, May 27.
The auction featured a wide range of items from domestic and international contemporary art, contemporary art by young artists, and Japanese paintings.

The centerpiece of the auction was a set of gold tea ceremony utensils formerly owned by Count Takatsugu Todo. The auction attracted a great deal of attention as it was covered by the TV media and sold for 345 million yen (including the bidding fee only).

This auction was held on Saturday, May 27 at the Marunouchi Building Hall in Marunouchi, Tokyo, and attracted a large number of auction participants. The auction was also conducted via online and telephone bidding.

Works by big names such as Yayoi Kusama, Leonard Fujita, and Shinsui Ito are also featured.

This auction covered a wide range of young contemporary artists such as Ayako Rokkaku and Pop Art artists such as David Hockney, while the lineup was deep in the pocketbook, covering works by prominent artists such as Leonard Fujita “Girl and Cat” and Shinsui Ito “Mrs. N”. Several Kusama works, including Yayoi Kusama’s “Pumpkin,” were also on display toward the end of the auction.

Also at the end of the auction, the bidding for “Huangshan Unkai” by Matazo Kayama took place. The bid was far higher than the prior estimate (70-100 million yen) and sold for 195.5 million yen, the highest price ever paid, prompting a round of applause from the audience.

The remarkable set of gold tea ceremony utensils originally belonged to Count Takashao Todo, and was a treasure that had been handed down in the Todo family for generations. There is an anecdote about Takatora Todo, who was treated favorably by Hideyoshi Toyotomi in praise of his valiant efforts during the Korean invasion.

The auction was heated, with many bidders participating. When the auction ended with a hammer price of 300 million yen and a winning bid of 345 million yen, the venue was filled with cheers. It was announced that this set of gold tea ceremony utensils was sold by the Hirosawa Art Museum.

“To Return Alive, To Bring Others Home Alive”

Opening nationwide on August 15, 2025—marking eighty years since the end of World War II—YUKIKAZE is a feature film based on the true story of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) destroyer Yukikaze, a vessel that rescued countless lives amid the horrors of war. A press screening was held in advance at the Sony Pictures screening room.

The destroyer Yukikaze, which served throughout the Pacific War, was renowned for rescuing numerous sailors thrown into the sea during fierce naval battles, surviving to the end of the war virtually unscathed. It earned the legendary moniker “the lucky ship.” This film brings to life the ship’s heroic journey, alongside the lives of those who persevered through one of the most turbulent eras in modern history.

Leading the cast is Yutaka Takenouchi as Captain Kazutoshi Terasawa—a fictional amalgamation inspired by the real-life captains of Yukikaze. Hiroshi Tamaki portrays Petty Officer First Class Kohei Hayase. Supporting roles are delivered by an ensemble of acclaimed actors including Daiken Okudaira, Rena Tanaka, Kanji Ishimaru, and Toru Masuoka. Kiichi Nakai delivers a commanding performance as Vice Admiral Seiichi Itō, the Second Fleet Commander of the IJN who met his fate aboard the battleship Yamato.

In today’s world, once again shaken by division and violence, YUKIKAZE poses an urgent question to those of us living in the peace that others fought to protect: Are we once again treading the path of past mistakes?
