What is Choju-giga?
Choju-giga (鳥獣戯画, literally “Animal Caricatures”)
This is a national treasure transmitted to Kozan-ji Temple in Ukyo-ku, Kyoto. Famous for being “the oldest manga in Japan”, the play of anthropomorphic animals is drawn with a lively brushstroke. The author is unknown, and is thought to be related to the Tendai monk’s tradition of “kokoe” (improvised caricature).
There are four types of obi fasteners!
<Playing in the water>
The obi clip of the famous rabbit watering scene. It is the theory that these two rabbits are the same rabbit, and that they are different time projections with the same screen drawn before and after diving.
Playing in the water
<Catch and run>
An excerpt of rabbits and frogs from the chasing scene depicted in the thirteenth paper. There is a theory that this chasing child might be a print of medieval children’s play of printing.
Catch and run
<Frog Dengaku>
The scene of the frog’s Dengaku drawn on the 15th paper is obi-banded. It seems that Dengaku was also one of the annual events from the Middle Ages, just like printing.
Frog Dengaku
<Sumo>
Famous sumo scene. It reproduces details such as the fingertips of a frog and the expression of a rabbit. The frame is based on the flame from the mouth of the winning frog.
