Special accommodation plans with special viewing of the ‘Chugen Manto Lantern Festival’ at Kasuga Taisha, a Shinto ritual to pray for the fulfilment of various wishes of the people, are available.

2024.08.02

Shisui Luxury Collection Hotel Nara will launch a special accommodation plan from Tuesday 23 July 2024 that includes a special viewing of the Chugen Mantoro, a two-day event in which approximately 3,000 lanterns are lit on the grounds of the World Heritage Kasuga Taisha shrine to pray for the fulfilment of various wishes of the people.

The 3,000 lanterns in the grounds of Kasuga Taisha have been dedicated since the end of the Heian period (794-1185) by aristocrats, warriors and common people who worship the Kasuga no Kami, wishing for the safety of their families, prosperity in business, long military fortunes and the repose of their ancestors’ souls.

The Nakamoto Mandoro is a Shinto ritual held only during the Setsubun Festival in February and on the nights of 14 and 15 August, when all 3,000 lanterns are lit to pray for the fulfilment of people’s various wishes.

You will be guided by a priest through the offering of paper lanterns and the lighting of tsuri-inton lanterns with your own prayers, followed by a visit to the Kasuga Wakamiya Shrine and the Kasuga Taisha Main Hall, both brightly coloured in vermilion. The shrine grounds are filled with a magical atmosphere when all the lanterns are lit, including the approximately 2,000 stone lanterns that line the approach to the shrine and the vermilion-painted Gohonden Corridor, which is lined with approximately 1,000 tsuriton (hanging lanterns).
