Enjoy the early summer of Hakone with a “hydrangea stay”

2021.05.15

“Hydrangea” is in full bloom in early summer. The Hakonetozan Line, which connects Odawara Station to Gora Station, is nicknamed the “hydrangea train,” and you can see the colorful hydrangeas from the train window. At the hot spring inn “Hoshino Resort Kai Hakone” in Hakone, we will hold an accommodation plan “Hydrangea Exhausted Stay” for a limited time.
You can appreciate the hydrangea while listening to the babbling of the clear stream Sukumogawa flowing in front of you, and in the guest room you can make accessories by combining Hakone’s traditional craft “Hakone parquet” with hydrangea, and Japanese sweets that look like hydrangea. Enjoy a hydrangea-filled stay, including tasting.

Guest room rim and hydrangea

KAI Hakone has only one room, “Hakone Parquet Room, Japanese-style room with a murmuring rim stand”, which is one of the local rooms in “Kai” where you can fully feel the local culture. The guest rooms are arranged using Hakone parquet. Hydrangea blooms around the pedestal approaching the Sukumo River from the window of the guest room, and you can enjoy the babbling of the river and the view of Mt.

Accessory kit that combines Hakone parquet and hydrangea

In the guest room, we will prepare an “accessory kit” that combines Hakone parquet with hydrangea petals and petals. An original Zuku created with the Hakone parquet workshop “Rokuki Woodworks” (thinly cut blocks with a pattern of wood). By combining with hydrangea parts, you can make summer accessories such as hairpins and earrings that match your yukata.

Offering hydrangea Japanese sweets and hydrangea kakigori in the tea room

The guest rooms have a tea room with hydrangea and Hakone parquet hanging scrolls. In this tea room, you can enjoy Japanese sweets such as Neri-kiri that imitate hydrangea with matcha. We will prepare a sweet tray and matcha bowl made of Hakone parquet. In addition, after taking a breath, the original shaved ice “Hydrangea Kakigori” of Kai Hakone, which expresses the colorful blue-purple hydrangea with jelly and syrup, is also offered, and you can taste the sweetness with the theme of hydrangea.

Eighty Years After the War: A Reflection on the Preciousness of Ordinary Life YUKIKAZE – In Theaters Nationwide from August 15, 2025

“To Return Alive, To Bring Others Home Alive”

Opening nationwide on August 15, 2025—marking eighty years since the end of World War II—YUKIKAZE is a feature film based on the true story of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) destroyer Yukikaze, a vessel that rescued countless lives amid the horrors of war. A press screening was held in advance at the Sony Pictures screening room.

The destroyer Yukikaze, which served throughout the Pacific War, was renowned for rescuing numerous sailors thrown into the sea during fierce naval battles, surviving to the end of the war virtually unscathed. It earned the legendary moniker “the lucky ship.” This film brings to life the ship’s heroic journey, alongside the lives of those who persevered through one of the most turbulent eras in modern history.

Leading the cast is Yutaka Takenouchi as Captain Kazutoshi Terasawa—a fictional amalgamation inspired by the real-life captains of Yukikaze. Hiroshi Tamaki portrays Petty Officer First Class Kohei Hayase. Supporting roles are delivered by an ensemble of acclaimed actors including Daiken Okudaira, Rena Tanaka, Kanji Ishimaru, and Toru Masuoka. Kiichi Nakai delivers a commanding performance as Vice Admiral Seiichi Itō, the Second Fleet Commander of the IJN who met his fate aboard the battleship Yamato.

In today’s world, once again shaken by division and violence, YUKIKAZE poses an urgent question to those of us living in the peace that others fought to protect: Are we once again treading the path of past mistakes? As collective memory of the war fades, this film becomes ever more vital—a call to reflect on the true value of peace.
