[Hoshino Resorts Tomamu]The Ice Church celebrates its 20th anniversary! The Ice Village, woven from ice and snow and appearing only in winter, opens on 10 December 2025.

2025.10.01

Hoshino Resorts Tomamu, a nature wonder resort where you can feel the vastness of Hokkaido’s land, will open its “Ice Village” from 10 December 2025 to 14 March 2026. This enchanting town, woven from ice and snow, appears only on winter nights.
This ice village, made possible by Tomamu’s uniquely harsh winter cold, features eleven domes constructed from ice and snow across a 3.2-hectare site, offering various experiences to enjoy the chill. The “Ice Church”, the symbol of the Ice Village, has witnessed the vows of many couples since its creation in 2005. This winter marks the 20th anniversary of the Ice Church. To commemorate this milestone, a new attraction, the Ice Museum, will open, offering visitors a deeper insight into the evolution and creation story of the Ice Church.

The Enchanting Ice Village

The Ice Village, appearing only on winter nights each year, is a seasonal feature of Tomamu. This ice town spans 3.2 hectares, featuring 11 domes constructed from ice and snow, including an “Ice Bar” and an “Ice Restaurant”. The “Ice Church” and “Ice Hotel”, located at the very heart of the village, are its symbols, built entirely from a single sheet of ice from ceiling to floor. Since its inception in the winter of 1998, the Ice Village has continued to offer experiences that embrace the cold.

The “Ice Church”, where over 660 couples have held their wedding ceremonies over 20 years, has been renovated.

The Ice Church is a special church that appears for only about one month each winter. Its defining feature is that it is constructed from a single, seamless sheet of ice, embodying the sentiment that ‘the pure feelings of two people continue unbroken’. Furthermore, everything—the altar, the cross, the aisle, and the chairs—is made entirely of ice and snow. The pure, transparent ice, formed by Tomamu’s harsh winter climate, reflects light, creating a space enveloped in a beautiful glow known as “Ice Blue”.

The Ice Museum: Unravelling the History and Stories of the Ice Church

To offer a deeper experience of the Ice Church’s story as it marks its 20th anniversary, the new “Ice Museum” will open. Here, we explore how the Ice Church’s mystical beauty is created amidst the harsh winter cold and how it has evolved to the present day. Through models and photographs of past Ice Churches, we reveal its 20-year evolution, the untold story of its creation, and its enduring appeal.

Freeze, melt, discover new flavours at ice restaurants and ice dessert shops

At the Ice Restaurant, we serve “Ice Ramen” – cold noodles and frozen toppings in a chilled soup made with Hokkaido’s signature kelp broth – alongside piping hot “Cheese Fondue” to warm you up.

At the ice dessert shop, you can enjoy unique sweets that make the most of the cold. We offer “Original Chocolate Making”, where you can pour chocolate into an ice bowl and watch it solidify before your eyes, as well as “White Chocolate Ice Bars”, made by dipping an ice bar into warm white chocolate.

The Ice Hotel, where guests can experience accommodation in a space entirely crafted from ice, from the guest rooms to the open-air baths. The Ice Hotel offers a unique lodging experience where everything from the guest rooms to the open-air baths is crafted from ice.

At the Ice Hotel, guests can experience an overnight stay in a space where the ceiling, walls, floor, and furnishings are all crafted from ice, with only one group accommodated per day. Its defining feature is the opportunity to immerse oneself in a fantastical ice world, feeling the presence of nature within this tranquil space.

Eighty Years After the War: A Reflection on the Preciousness of Ordinary Life YUKIKAZE – In Theaters Nationwide from August 15, 2025

“To Return Alive, To Bring Others Home Alive”

Opening nationwide on August 15, 2025—marking eighty years since the end of World War II—YUKIKAZE is a feature film based on the true story of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) destroyer Yukikaze, a vessel that rescued countless lives amid the horrors of war. A press screening was held in advance at the Sony Pictures screening room.

The destroyer Yukikaze, which served throughout the Pacific War, was renowned for rescuing numerous sailors thrown into the sea during fierce naval battles, surviving to the end of the war virtually unscathed. It earned the legendary moniker “the lucky ship.” This film brings to life the ship’s heroic journey, alongside the lives of those who persevered through one of the most turbulent eras in modern history.

Leading the cast is Yutaka Takenouchi as Captain Kazutoshi Terasawa—a fictional amalgamation inspired by the real-life captains of Yukikaze. Hiroshi Tamaki portrays Petty Officer First Class Kohei Hayase. Supporting roles are delivered by an ensemble of acclaimed actors including Daiken Okudaira, Rena Tanaka, Kanji Ishimaru, and Toru Masuoka. Kiichi Nakai delivers a commanding performance as Vice Admiral Seiichi Itō, the Second Fleet Commander of the IJN who met his fate aboard the battleship Yamato.

In today’s world, once again shaken by division and violence, YUKIKAZE poses an urgent question to those of us living in the peace that others fought to protect: Are we once again treading the path of past mistakes? As collective memory of the war fades, this film becomes ever more vital—a call to reflect on the true value of peace.
