Japanese confectionery manufacturer and retailer Tsuruya Yoshinobu Co. will release a limited-edition set of handmade kompeito sugar from Kyoto-based kompeito sugar specialist Ryokujuan Shimizu and Tsuruya Yoshinobu’s IROMONAKA mini monaka, which was released last year in 2024, in special packaging. The set will be available in limited quantities from 12:00 on Saturday 18 January 2025 from the official online store. It will also be available in the Ginza Midori-juan Shimizu store from mid-February.

Strawberry Compeito
The use of ingredients so rich in flavour that the strawberry seeds remain on the surface.

Natural cider kompeito
The use of natural water with a pleasant taste gives it a clear, refreshing flavour.

Kumpeito mandarin orange sugar
The use of early ripening mandarins (with green peel) gives it a refreshing flavour.

Kyoho Grape Kompeito Sugar
Coloured with the skin and containing the pulp, you can taste the grape itself.

Azuki Beans
Made from the finest Tanba Dainagon azuki beans. The sweetness and smoothness of this sweet bean paste is refined and mild.

Also made from Umaji Dainagon azuki beans from Tanba. Smooth, slightly sweet Koshi-an (sweet red bean paste).

Matcha Green Tea
A classic Japanese flavour using Uji Matcha from Kyoto. Smooth Matcha-an with the scent of matcha.

Yuzu
Yuzu paste and peel are kneaded into the white bean paste to create a moderately sweet and refreshing flavour.

The Hiroshima Museum of Art is hosting the exhibition “ZIPANGU: Contemporary Artists Who Defined the Heisei Era” (November 2, 2024 – December 22, 2024). This showcase brings together works by some of the most prominent figures in Japan’s contemporary art scene, including Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, Makoto Aida, Yoshitomo Nara, Chiharu Shiota, Izumi Kato, Akira Yamaguchi, and Miwa Komatsu. The exhibition has already garnered significant attention, exceeding 10,000 visitors.

HYAKKEI covered the dialogue between contemporary artist Takashi Murakami and Sueo Mizuma, the curator of this exhibition, held at the RIHGA Royal Hotel Hiroshima. We also conducted an exclusive interview with Mr. Mizuma.

The discussions centered on the aspirations behind the ZIPANGU exhibition and offered forward-looking insights, not only into Japan’s art world but also into the rediscovery of value within Japanese culture by its people.
