Daiichi Printing Co launched a notepad, komemo, on 29 April 2025 (Tuesday, national holiday), made from kome-kami, paper made from rice that is no longer eaten.
Komemo uses kome-kami, a paper material that combines rice that can no longer be distributed as food with FSC-certified pulp. By using rice that was originally discarded, the paper material helps to reduce food loss and CO2 emissions.
In addition, 1% of the sales of this paper material is donated to a food bank that provides food assistance to needy families and children.
Komemo is printed using an old-fashioned letterpress process. The artisans print each book by hand, so that the fluffy, three-dimensional texture of the rice grains and the shadows created on the surface of the paper are gently transferred to the fingertips.
The design of the paper captures the charm of rice as it is, evoking memories of Hinomaru lunch boxes, triangular rice balls and the like.
