In collaboration with Honma Woodworks Ltd, established in 1929, and the Honma Marquetry Museum, Hakone Gora Karaku will hold a Hakone marquetry workshop on 22 (Sat) and 23 (Sun) February 2025, as part of its efforts to pass on the history and culture of the Hakone region.
Traditional craftsman Hirotake Honma is invited to explain the history of Hakone marquetry and to finish the marquetry coasters by carefully combining natural colours.
Provides a venue for introducing the history and culture of Hakone to the local community.
The marquetry workshop programme includes an explanation of the history and production process of Hakone marquetry and a demonstration by a traditional craftsman, which is only open to the public at Honma Woodworks, to give visitors an idea of how the craftsmen work. Visitors will also have the opportunity to experience Hakone marquetry by making hexagonal coasters using the Muku technique, which combines the natural colouring of the trees in the Hakone mountain range and works with the thickness of the wood.
