In Okinawa, since the Ryukyu Kingdom era, the winter solstice sun has been called the “Young Sun” (Wakateida), its vibrant light invoked to wish for a healthy year ahead. Your stay in the special room “Teida” begins with Ryukyu classical music celebrating the morning sun and a special breakfast in the courtyard. During the day, relax body and mind in the comfortably warm pool even in winter, and experience Okinawan customs in the lush gardens. Experience painting auspicious patterns* on traditional Bingata batik fabric, nurturing your spirit for the new year through tranquil moments.
*Auspicious patterns (kisshōmon) are traditional designs imbued with meanings and wishes for prosperity, longevity, and good fortune.
With celebratory sounds, we welcome the new sun
In Okinawa, it has been said since ancient times that after the winter solstice, the sun is reborn and a powerful “young sun” rises. Consequently, the winter solstice is considered an auspicious day, equal in significance to New Year. Around the time the young sun rises, the Ryukyuan classical music piece “Kajade Fūbushi” is performed against the backdrop of red tiles illuminated by the sun’s rays. Kajade Fūbushi is a representative piece of Ryukyuan classical music, performed at celebratory gatherings to honour the peace and prosperity of the Ryukyuan Kingdom. Accompanied by the sound of the sanshin, it welcomes the new sun and expresses wishes for health throughout the year.
Special Breakfast: Experience Okinawan Culture in the Courtyard
In Okinawa, there is a custom of eating “tounji-jūshi” on the winter solstice. This dish combines taro root with “jūshi”, a traditional Okinawan rice dish cooked with various ingredients. Taro is considered an auspicious ingredient in Okinawan cuisine and is indispensable in celebratory dishes. For the exclusive plan’s special breakfast, tables are set in the courtyard overlooking the sea. Savour a breakfast unique to the region while gazing at the ever-changing hues of the ocean bathed in sunlight, enjoying an elegant morning.
A garden tour encountering Okinawan auspicious symbols, and an experience creating Benigata picture postcards to deliver good fortune
In Okinawa, there has long been a belief that happiness comes from revering nature as the dwelling place of the gods and cherishing daily life, and various customs remain vibrant to this day. The “Kisshō Garden Tour”, guided by Hoshinoya Okinawa staff, takes you through the grounds. Encounter the hinpun – traditional Okinawan protective screens found in homes – the auspicious patterns imbued with wishes, and the Fukugi tree, said to bring good fortune. Experience the heartfelt aspirations of those who wish for a healthy life.
The “Bingata Picture Letter Delivering Good Fortune”, which employs dyeing to depict auspicious motifs also used in Okinawa’s traditional Bingata craft, allows you to vividly colour auspicious designs such as plum blossoms, pine trees, and bats. Here, you may inscribe thoughts for cherished ones, record New Year’s resolutions, or spend tranquil moments reflecting on your own heart.
