Kai Yufuin, located in Yufuin Onsen, Oita Prefecture, will host the event “A Moment of Craftsmanship: Encounter the ‘Phantom Material’ Shichito-i, Preserved by Just Seven Artisans – Original Bag Making Experience” from 6 January to 31 March 2026.
Private Handicraft Experience: Learning the Passion Behind Preserving Shichijima Rush
At the workshop, you will first gain a deep understanding of the history of Shichijima rush from the craftsmen themselves. You will then view the work of Mr Iwakiri, who has expanded the use of Shichijima rush beyond traditional tatami mats, round cushions, and rugs to create a wide range of items including accessories and kitchenware. This is a private cultural experience where you can hear the craftsmen’s own thoughts on preserving the tradition of Shichijima rush.
Learning from the artisans: a moment to savour the craftsmanship and fragrance of Shichishima rush
After hearing Mr Iwakiri’s thoughts on the legacy he wishes to pass on, participants will handle Shichijima rush and create an original bag. During the weaving process, they will be enveloped in the refreshing scent unique to Shichijima rush, reminiscent of freshly made tatami mats. Under Mr Iwakiri’s special guidance, participants can experience the craftsmanship of the artisans firsthand.
Indulge in a luxurious moment of Shichishima rush grass, featuring original bags and round rush mats
After your workshop experience, you will stay at Kai Yufuin carrying the original bag you crafted. The beautiful, unspoilt scenery of Yufuin can be felt throughout the hotel, from the terraced rice fields spreading out at its centre to the view of Mount Yufu from the large bathhouse. Shichijima rush is used everywhere – in the guest room lighting, the dining areas, and the public spaces – allowing you to feel its warmth close at hand.
Exclusively for this plan, a round mat woven from Shichijima rush is provided. During your stay, you can stroll around the grounds carrying your bag, or lay the mat on the Terrace overlooking the terraced rice fields. Here, enveloped in the refreshing scent of Shichijima rush, you can spend luxurious moments at your leisure, savouring the slow passage of time.
