An immersive experience set at Kitano Tenmangū Shrine. Mika Ninagawa with EiM presents the ‘KYOTO NIPPON FESTIVAL’

2026.02.06

The ‘KYOTO NIPPON FESTIVAL 2026 – A Garden Where Beauty Blooms Beyond Time -’, curated by Mika Ninagawa with EiM and set at Kitano Tenmangū Shrine, will be held from Sunday, 1 February 2026 to Sunday, 24 May 2026. Using the historic Kitano Tenmangū Shrine as its stage, the festival will showcase Japan’s “beauty” and ‘culture’ from Kyoto to the world.

Art within nature, revealing myriad facets

This project presents two distinct experiences: an art installation by Mika Ninagawa with EiM, utilising Kitano Tenmangū Shrine’s iconic plum garden and tea house; and the inaugural immersive performance by dance company DAZZLE, Mika Ninagawa, and EiM.

This marks Japan’s first immersive performance within such a historically significant building. Mika Ninagawa with EiM’s stage design and DAZZLE’s performance will unfold in three dimensions, resonating with the space’s historical character.

Snow, Moon and Flowers: The Three Gardens - Plum Garden ‘Flower Garden’ 《 Garden of Light and Flowers 》

An outdoor art installation featuring over 1,000 crystals suspended from the trees of the Plum Garden, revealing different expressions with the changing seasons and light. At the tea house within the Plum Garden, you can enjoy traditional Japanese sweets and savour the beauty of Japan’s changing seasons at your leisure.

Odoi Baikōken: “Afterglow”

A spatial art installation designed to reveal the quiet radiance inherent in the cycle of life, achieved by bringing together within the tea room’s interior two contrasting expressions: flowers in full bloom, and flowers that have fallen, withered, and transformed into seeds. Rather than the vibrant colours and the quietude of decay competing, they are arranged so that their mutual presence deepens each other.

Fūgetsuden Immersive Performance: The Grand Tea Gathering of the Flowered Night

An art experience that draws you into the narrative, created through a collaboration between the globally acclaimed dance company DAZZLE and Mika Ninagawa with EiM. Set within the Fūgetsuden Hall at Kitano Tenmangū Shrine, this immersive performance features DAZZLE’s dance unfolding within the artistic world crafted by Mika Ninagawa with EiM.

An “immersive performance” is a form of theatre where the audience does not sit in designated seats but instead enters the same space as the performers, experiencing the story as characters within it. There are no fixed audience seating areas or stages within the narrative space; the entire space becomes the stage.

Eighty Years After the War: A Reflection on the Preciousness of Ordinary Life YUKIKAZE – In Theaters Nationwide from August 15, 2025

“To Return Alive, To Bring Others Home Alive”

Opening nationwide on August 15, 2025—marking eighty years since the end of World War II—YUKIKAZE is a feature film based on the true story of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) destroyer Yukikaze, a vessel that rescued countless lives amid the horrors of war. A press screening was held in advance at the Sony Pictures screening room.

The destroyer Yukikaze, which served throughout the Pacific War, was renowned for rescuing numerous sailors thrown into the sea during fierce naval battles, surviving to the end of the war virtually unscathed. It earned the legendary moniker “the lucky ship.” This film brings to life the ship’s heroic journey, alongside the lives of those who persevered through one of the most turbulent eras in modern history.

Leading the cast is Yutaka Takenouchi as Captain Kazutoshi Terasawa—a fictional amalgamation inspired by the real-life captains of Yukikaze. Hiroshi Tamaki portrays Petty Officer First Class Kohei Hayase. Supporting roles are delivered by an ensemble of acclaimed actors including Daiken Okudaira, Rena Tanaka, Kanji Ishimaru, and Toru Masuoka. Kiichi Nakai delivers a commanding performance as Vice Admiral Seiichi Itō, the Second Fleet Commander of the IJN who met his fate aboard the battleship Yamato.

In today’s world, once again shaken by division and violence, YUKIKAZE poses an urgent question to those of us living in the peace that others fought to protect: Are we once again treading the path of past mistakes? As collective memory of the war fades, this film becomes ever more vital—a call to reflect on the true value of peace.
