Nazuna, a traditional machiya inn, will be hosting a limited-time event titled ‘Blooming in the Rain, Resting in the Hand – Carpenter × Higashi Hongan-ji × Hydrangea Afternoon Tea’ at Nazuna Kyoto Higashi Hongan-ji from Monday 1 June to Tuesday 30 June 2026, celebrating the beauty of hydrangeas and the rainy season.
Hydrangea Welcome Sweets: A Creation of Humidity and Light
Upon check-in, we serve welcome sweets in our lounge, adorned with hydrangeas. Just as hydrangeas reveal their true beauty on rainy days, you can relax and unwind in a space enveloped in the atmosphere of the rainy season.
・Hydrangea-inspired jelly (served in a glass dish and small sake cup)
・Fresh hydrangea-themed wagashi specially commissioned from Kyoto’s long-established confectioner, Kyogashi-tsukasa Masahiro Kanaya
(A special edition created exclusively for this event by the confectioner who also crafts Nazuna’s original amber sweets)
Kyoto in the Rain: A View Known Only to Those Who Stay
Higashi Hongan-ji—a place that finds its meaning through the presence of visitors; the craftsmanship of the carpenters who preserve the traditional townhouses; and the hydrangeas, whose beauty is brought to life by the rain.
All these share a common trait: a ‘passive beauty’ that does not assert itself, but rather finds its true value through the interplay of its surroundings and the people who inhabit them. We strive to create spaces where the visitor’s experience is only complete when they become part of the place itself.
