[Hoshinoya Karuizawa] A full moon recreated in a glass! Introducing the new ‘Full Moon Parfait’—a sophisticated moon-viewing dessert featuring autumnal delicacies such as Shine Muscat grapes and Anno sweet potatoes.

2026.08.21

At ‘Hoshinoya Karuizawa’ in Nagano Prefecture, the ‘Karuizawa Autumn Moon Banquet’ will be held from 1 September to 30 November 2026. Guests can enjoy a supreme, one-night-only moon-viewing experience from seven specially designated prime viewing spots, arranged in accordance with the phases of the moon. Now in its fourth year, on special nights when the full moon rises, the resort will serve the ‘Shine Muscat and Anno Sweet Potato Full Moon Parfait’—a dessert brimming with Shinshu’s unique autumn harvest and celebrating a bountiful harvest—from these prime seats overlooking the beautiful moon.

A Full Moon Parfait that recreates the reflection of the full moon on the water’s surface in a glass, expressing gratitude for the bounties of autumn

Nestled in a valley at the foot of Mount Asama, Hoshinoya Karuizawa is known as the ‘Valley Settlement’. This parfait is inspired by the water of the pond that flows through the centre of the grounds and the full moon reflected on its surface. The stillness of the pitch-black night is evoked by a rich black sesame tiramisu, whilst the pure water surface shimmering in the moonlight is represented by a vibrantly fragrant ginjo sake jelly. Garnished with Shine Muscat grapes—a symbol of autumn’s bounty—and featuring rich Anno sweet potato ice cream representing the full moon shining in the night sky, this dish embodies our gratitude for autumn’s gifts. Bathed in moonlight, you can savour the flavours of autumn to your heart’s content.

An original ‘Full Moon Glass’ crafted by hand by artisans in Shinshu, combining wood and glass

To showcase the beauty of the parfaits, we have chosen ‘MOKU glass’, created by a woodcraft brand based in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. This innovative glass features a unique design combining a glass body with a handle and base made from natural wood. Combining the transparency of glass with the warmth of wood, each piece is hand-carved by artisans one by one; as a result, the grain and colour of each piece are unique, making them one-of-a-kind items that have been highly acclaimed at craft exhibitions both in Japan and abroad.

A moon-viewing experience from a magical vantage point where lighting has been reduced to a minimum

As you step onto the terrace overlooking the grounds, a magical scene bathed in the light of the full moon unfolds before your eyes. At Hoshinoya Karuizawa, where lighting has been reduced to a minimum in keeping with the philosophy of ‘In Praise of Shadows’, only the soft moonlight and the faint orange glow filtering from the guest rooms illuminate the night.

Eighty Years After the War: A Reflection on the Preciousness of Ordinary Life YUKIKAZE – In Theaters Nationwide from August 15, 2025

“To Return Alive, To Bring Others Home Alive”

Opening nationwide on August 15, 2025—marking eighty years since the end of World War II—YUKIKAZE is a feature film based on the true story of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) destroyer Yukikaze, a vessel that rescued countless lives amid the horrors of war. A press screening was held in advance at the Sony Pictures screening room.

The destroyer Yukikaze, which served throughout the Pacific War, was renowned for rescuing numerous sailors thrown into the sea during fierce naval battles, surviving to the end of the war virtually unscathed. It earned the legendary moniker “the lucky ship.” This film brings to life the ship’s heroic journey, alongside the lives of those who persevered through one of the most turbulent eras in modern history.

Leading the cast is Yutaka Takenouchi as Captain Kazutoshi Terasawa—a fictional amalgamation inspired by the real-life captains of Yukikaze. Hiroshi Tamaki portrays Petty Officer First Class Kohei Hayase. Supporting roles are delivered by an ensemble of acclaimed actors including Daiken Okudaira, Rena Tanaka, Kanji Ishimaru, and Toru Masuoka. Kiichi Nakai delivers a commanding performance as Vice Admiral Seiichi Itō, the Second Fleet Commander of the IJN who met his fate aboard the battleship Yamato.

In today’s world, once again shaken by division and violence, YUKIKAZE poses an urgent question to those of us living in the peace that others fought to protect: Are we once again treading the path of past mistakes? As collective memory of the war fades, this film becomes ever more vital—a call to reflect on the true value of peace.
