[Hoshinoya Tokyo] A winter Japanese ryokan experience in the heart of the city, where you can be soothed by natural hot spring water drawn from 1,500 metres underground and immerse yourself in the refined elegance of the Edo period

2026.10.23

‘Hoshinoya’ is a collection of properties, each offering a truly extraordinary escape through its own unique themes. ‘Hoshinoya Tokyo’, a Japanese ryokan in a tower that continues to evolve in step with the modern era, is offering a winter stay inspired by Japan’s finest traditions from 1 December 2026 to 28 February 2027. Highlights during this period include bathing in the Otemachi Onsen, sourced from 1,500 metres below ground, as well as special post-bath sweets to be savoured in the Ochanoma Lounge; a reinterpretation of Edo’s chic street-food culture; and the winter-exclusive ‘Tenku Asa Keiko’ (Morning Training in the Sky), where guests warm their bodies with early morning sword-swinging practice. Furthermore, the New Year will feature a New Year’s tea ceremony and other traditional seasonal delights. This is a special stay where you can immerse yourself in an extraordinary experience whilst remaining in the heart of the city, deeply rejuvenating both body and mind.

Early Morning Training Session: Warming Up with Rapid Sword Swings

Held on a rooftop 160 metres above ground, overlooking the city of Tokyo, this rapid sword-swinging training session is supervised by a master of the Hokushin Ittō-ryū school. Under the crisp, clear winter morning sky, participants swing their wooden swords with vigour to warm their frozen bodies right to the core. Overlooking the spectacular cityscape of central Tokyo, you’ll regulate your breathing and posture in the tradition of the Edo-period samurai—an extraordinary experience unique to this venue. After the training session, head to Otemachi Onsen. Wash away the sweat with a refreshing bath and surrender yourself to the mineral-rich waters, guiding your mind and body into a state of even deeper relaxation. The sky, viewed through the open-ceiling atrium, takes on a different character from the previous evening’s twilight or night, allowing you to luxuriate in a morning bath that is truly unique.

Rich ice cream to enjoy after a soak in the natural hot springs: Winter matcha topping

Derived from seawater trapped deep underground, ‘Otemachi Onsen’ is rich in salt and offers excellent moisturising and heat-retaining properties. Once you have warmed up thoroughly in the hot springs, make your way to the ‘Ochanoma Lounge’, which is connected to each guest room via a tatami-floored corridor. We serve our homemade ice cream generously topped with fragrant matcha, freshly whisked right before your eyes. The exquisite contrast in temperature pleasantly stimulates the senses, offering a deeply atmospheric experience unique to traditional Japanese ryokan.

The flavour is all the more exceptional when you deliberately step out into the slightly chilly evening air. We pair piping-hot hanpen, infused with a broth rich in umami, with a flavourful cup of hot sake. A flavour born in Nihonbashi and cherished at street stalls. As you let your thoughts wander to the winter scenery of Edo, this rich start to the evening quietly heightens your anticipation for dinner.

Eighty Years After the War: A Reflection on the Preciousness of Ordinary Life YUKIKAZE – In Theaters Nationwide from August 15, 2025

“To Return Alive, To Bring Others Home Alive”

Opening nationwide on August 15, 2025—marking eighty years since the end of World War II—YUKIKAZE is a feature film based on the true story of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) destroyer Yukikaze, a vessel that rescued countless lives amid the horrors of war. A press screening was held in advance at the Sony Pictures screening room.

The destroyer Yukikaze, which served throughout the Pacific War, was renowned for rescuing numerous sailors thrown into the sea during fierce naval battles, surviving to the end of the war virtually unscathed. It earned the legendary moniker “the lucky ship.” This film brings to life the ship’s heroic journey, alongside the lives of those who persevered through one of the most turbulent eras in modern history.

Leading the cast is Yutaka Takenouchi as Captain Kazutoshi Terasawa—a fictional amalgamation inspired by the real-life captains of Yukikaze. Hiroshi Tamaki portrays Petty Officer First Class Kohei Hayase. Supporting roles are delivered by an ensemble of acclaimed actors including Daiken Okudaira, Rena Tanaka, Kanji Ishimaru, and Toru Masuoka. Kiichi Nakai delivers a commanding performance as Vice Admiral Seiichi Itō, the Second Fleet Commander of the IJN who met his fate aboard the battleship Yamato.

In today’s world, once again shaken by division and violence, YUKIKAZE poses an urgent question to those of us living in the peace that others fought to protect: Are we once again treading the path of past mistakes? As collective memory of the war fades, this film becomes ever more vital—a call to reflect on the true value of peace.
