Yamaguchi Takeshi, a representative of Yamato Hagi ware Yamato’s Gallery (Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture), is a ceramic artist Takeshi Yamato, who is involved in the project by potters all over the country, which is being implemented at Japan’s largest cloud funding service “Makuake”. The project page for “Online Pottery Market 2020” was recruited for supporters. At present, there is no participation from the potters in Yamaguchi Prefecture, and Takeshi Yamato will be the first participant.
In order to prevent the spread of new coronavirus infection, activities such as sales and hands-on experience at actual stores have become inconvenient in the world of ceramics, and we have been hit hard. Under such circumstances, Takeshi Yamato will take on the challenge of creating new fans and disseminating information by participating in projects called crowdfunding that are held by potters all over the country.
Takeshi Yamato’s work, which will be released at “Makuake Online Ceramics Market 2020” from May 26th, is a novel technique and design that has never been seen before. We hope that this will be an opportunity to support those who are interested, as well as those who are not.
Although it has become a staple in glass, we are looking for supporters for the Hagi ware cup of Carbon pattern, which uses a technique that has not been used in pottery.
In this carbon pattern Hagi ware cup, once glazed with black glaze, and after main firing, carefully attach masking tape one by one, and use sandblast to scrape off the glaze of the part without masking for one thin skin ..
Since the glaze is glassy, the sandblasted part will be devitrified due to scratches, and a glossy part and a matte part will be born and a pattern can be created. This work requires patience, time, and high technology.
A wine glass type SAKE CUP with a thin stem that has been considered impossible with pottery has been patented in 2015 (Patent No. 5807939).
Especially, it goes well with sake, and the soak penetrates into the sake to change the taste to aged for a long time.

400 years ago, Terumoto Mouri, who traveled to the Korean Peninsula, returned to Japan with a local potter. In 1604, it was the origin of Hagi ware that allowed Hagi to open a kiln. It is said that there are many masterpieces of tea utensils. The container, which is carefully baked at a relatively low temperature according to the composition and properties of the soil, is characterized by a simple taste with a soft impression. The secret of its taste lies in the “penetration” of the raw material clay and the glaze mixed with it, and the “tea familiarity” in which the color, luster and atmosphere change over time as it is used. This variety of facial expressions, called “Hagi no Nanabake,” fascinates the rare tea masters and is why they are still loved by many people.
In Hagi Yaki in Yamaguchi City, Yamato Sakutaro from Matsumoto Village in Hagi City in 1868 established a kiln in Oyamaji, Miyano City, Yamaguchi City, which became the cornerstone of regional spread of Hagi Yaki.
Today, a group of ceramic artists seeking the new style while keeping the traditional kiln flames and continuing the tradition of Yamato Sakutaro’s pottery is sending the days of studying as Yamaguchi Hagi ware.
