Phillips Presents Sweet Jane in Fields of Daisies: A Special Online Selling Exhibition Celebrating Emerging Female Artists

NEW YORK/HONG KONG/LONDON – 7 SEPTEMBER2021:
Phillips is pleased to present a unique virtual multi-artist selling exhibition, Sweet Jane in Fields of Daisies, dedicated to an exciting group of culturally diverse female artists whose works serve as visual commentary on 21st century society. Thoughtfully curated by Joan Tucker, the exhibition features 19 artists and will be live 7 September – 28 September on Phillips.com.

The inspiration for the intriguing title comes from the iconic song by Velvet Underground, Sweet Jane, and a work by poet and artist John Giorno. The spark to combine the two into a unique metaphoric title, Sweet Jane in Fields of Daisies, came after listening to artist Lucia Love speak about her works and her practice in a live interview. Love constructs striking portraits and scenes from a symbolic world of ambiguity and humor. These scenes are coded with political symbolism and feminist ethics to touch on our present reality. Lucia Love’s painting, Gigantic, illustrated above, will be featured in the exhibition.

The 19 works in the exhibition explore themes such as personal experience, identity, gender and cultural histories. The idea behind Lucia Love’s work Gigantic was to depict an effortless strength that relates to collective potential, and also to explore how that value is falsely tied to an idealized masculinity regardless of author. Artist Hiejin Yoo takes inspiration from daily observations as recorded in her diary. Mundane events become large, semi-figurative oil paintings on canvas. The abstracted planes of colour and the richly layered marks evoke the subjectivity of a woman’s complex inner life. Her paintings give form and shape to the full range of her personal emotions, acting as intimate journals and meditations on self-discovery. An essential figure in the Spanish feminist art scene, Ángeles Agrela’s portraits of women are characterised by masses of cascading hair that often hides the subject’s face. Raising issues of beauty, artifice, and erasure, they are a distinctly female depiction of the feminine in contemporary society. Technicolour tresses in bright blue, pink or russet red tones are braided into ‘veils,’ calling back to the symbolic significance of hair for women across many cultures. Ania Hobson is unafraid to capture the details of contemporary British life, never shying away from the realness of the people and places she sees around her, right down to the yellow lacing in a pair of Doc Marten boots. Laid back and direct, her work is stamped with the signs of the times, articulating a post-modern mood through her deft and personal translation of classical oil painting techniques. Her ode to Millennial womenhood, ‘A Portrait of Two Female Painters’ won her the prestigious Young Artist Award at London’s National Portrait Gallery in 2018.

Jonathan Crockett, Chairman, Asia, Phillips, said, “To continue Phillips’ significant recent developments in the digital space, and to further our legacy as a bellwether of emerging talent, we are proud to bring this one-of-a-kind virtual selling exhibition to art enthusiasts all over the world. The female artists represented in the exhibition are some of the contemporary art worlds’ rising stars on the cusp of significant international visibility and prominence. Their multiple unfolding stories offer our audience varied and thought-provoking experiences, highlighting shared societal themes in contemporary life. We look forward to sharing these works with our global community of collectors and art lovers on Phillips.com.”

Iide Town, Yamagata Prefecture] “Submerged Forest of Lake Shirakawa,” a Mysterious Spring-Only Scene

The mysterious scenery of Lake Shirakawa in the town of Iide in southern Yamagata Prefecture can be seen only during two months in spring. In spring, a large amount of melt water flows into Lake Shirakawa from the Iide mountain range, one of Japan’s 100 most famous mountains, where there is heavy snowfall. When the lake is full of water, it creates a fantastic sight of white willow trees as if they are growing out of the water.

[Hoshinoya Tokyo] “New Year’s Kabuki Stay” brings the hospitality of an Edo Period theatrical teahouse to the present day.

Hoshinoya Tokyo, a Japanese-style inn located in Otemachi, Tokyo, will again this year host the “New Year Kabuki Stay” program, a two-day and one-night stay from January 5 to 26, 2024.
For people living in Edo, one of their New Year’s pleasures was to watch Kabuki, and it was a chic way to spend the New Year. Theatrical teahouses supported this way of enjoying Kabuki. In addition to arranging tickets to the theater, the teahouses delighted patrons by providing a complete range of services, including plot notes, tea, sweets, makunouchi box lunches, and snacks and drinks (*1). Hoshinoya Tokyo offers a stay to celebrate the New Year with hospitality similar to the theatrical teahouses of the time.

[Shinjuku Gyoen x Naked] NAKED Autumn Foliage in Shinjuku Gyoen 2023 to be held

From November 22 (Wed) to December 3 (Sun), 2023, an autumn foliage lighting event will be held at Shinjuku Gyoen. Following the cherry blossom event this spring, Shinjuku Gyoen and Naked will collaborate again this fall for the autumn foliage event. Shinjuku Gyoen, one of Tokyo’s most famous gardens, is one of the few places in the city where visitors can enjoy the autumn leaves. The 200-meter-long rows of plane trees, the best maple tree spot in the city, Momijiyama, and the “Middle Pond,” with its spectacular reflection in the pond, will offer a world where the autumn leaves of Shinjuku Gyoen and Naked’s art and food are fused together.
