The New Year’s tradition “Nagahama Bonsai Exhibition” in the Shiga / Hubei area will be held again this year. The appearance of red and white bonsai plums lined up in the tatami room of Keiunkan is spectacular. Continuing from last year, the new building is holding a collaborative exhibition with Tetsuhei Hayakawa, a paper-cutting artist living in Maibara.

Outline of the 71st Nagahama Bonsai Exhibition

Period: January 9th (Sun) – March 10th (Thu), 2022 (61 days, open throughout the period)
Venue: Keiunkan (2-5 Minatocho, Nagahama City, 3 minutes walk from JR Nagahama Station)
Time: 9:00 to 17:00 (extended until 20:30 when lit up) *Admission is 30 minutes before
Price: Adults 800 yen, elementary and junior high school students 400 yen
(2 discounts for groups of 20 or more)
Exhibition: Approximately 90 pots (replaced sequentially according to how they bloom during the period)

■Night special project “Bonsai x Bamboo Light”
During the night illumination period, a special Bonsai exhibition will be held on the 2nd floor of the main building. Please enjoy the fantastic bamboo lights and the Bonsai Exhibition.

You can see the growth of the Bonsai “Immortality” and “Fuyomine”, which were born by Sumitomo Forestry’s technology, which first appeared last year.

■Kimono DE Bonsai
Kimono people can enter the Nagahama Bonsai Exhibition for free to liven up the ongoing “Kimono DE Nagahama”.

A photo contest that expresses the charm of the Nagahama Bonsai Exhibition. There is a prize in the gold medal!

■Bon plum experience
– Let’s make an original Bonsai –
This is the first Bon plum experience this year. Why don’t you choose your favorite bonsai and pot from the mini bonsai sold at the venue and make your own bonsai? A professional manager will teach you in detail about replanting, pruning, annual management, etc.

Price: 4,000 yen ~ (Admission fee not included)

– Bonsai management experience –
Throughout the year, you will learn how to manage and enjoy Bonsai from the Bonsai manager. The bonsai that has been cultivated and managed will be exhibited at the 72nd Nagahama Bonsai Exhibition. We will prepare the bonsai plums and ingredients to be managed.

Price: 18,000 yen
Period: Reiwa 1 year from March 4th. 3rd Sunday of every month
Location: Bonsai management field

ZIPANGU Contemporary artists who have run through the Heisei era” Takashi Murakami x Sueo Mizuma dialogue: ‘Beyond the Theory of Artistic Entrepreneurship’ / Interview with Mr. Mizuma: ‘Rediscovering the Value of Japanese Culture by the Japanese People

The Hiroshima Museum of Art is hosting the exhibition “ZIPANGU: Contemporary Artists Who Defined the Heisei Era” (November 2, 2024 – December 22, 2024). This showcase brings together works by some of the most prominent figures in Japan’s contemporary art scene, including Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, Makoto Aida, Yoshitomo Nara, Chiharu Shiota, Izumi Kato, Akira Yamaguchi, and Miwa Komatsu. The exhibition has already garnered significant attention, exceeding 10,000 visitors.

HYAKKEI covered the dialogue between contemporary artist Takashi Murakami and Sueo Mizuma, the curator of this exhibition, held at the RIHGA Royal Hotel Hiroshima. We also conducted an exclusive interview with Mr. Mizuma.

The discussions centered on the aspirations behind the ZIPANGU exhibition and offered forward-looking insights, not only into Japan’s art world but also into the rediscovery of value within Japanese culture by its people.

Two types of autumn-only red seals, ‘Chrysanthemum and Tanzaku’ and ‘Autumn Leaves and Candles’, are now available at Daisho-in Temple, Miyajima, a World Heritage island.

Two types of paper seals made exclusively for autumn, ‘Chrysanthemum and Tanzaku’ and ‘Autumn Leaves and Candles’, have been available since Monday 9 September at Daisho-in Temple on the World Heritage island of Miyajima. Quantities are limited and will run out as soon as they are gone.
