【OMO5 Otaru】Wrapped in a kotatsu on board, gaze upon the retro streetscape blanketed in snow: ‘Otaru Canal Kotatsu Cruising’ returns this year

2025.11.17

OMO5 Otaru by Hoshino Resorts, the city-centre hotel where you can fully enjoy Otaru, will once again host its “Otaru Canal Kotatsu Cruising” this year. This experience, available exclusively on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 6 December 2025 to 29 March 2026, allows guests to relax wrapped in a kotatsu on board a boat while gazing upon the retro streetscape blanketed in falling snow.

For guests only: boats equipped with kotatsu tables are in operation

Unlike standard canal cruises featuring bench seating, this programme operates on dedicated vessels equipped with kotatsu tables. This allows passengers to stay warm onboard even during Otaru’s harsh winters. Furthermore, the boats are illuminated by the warm glow of lamps. During the approximately 40-minute cruise, you can elegantly admire Otaru’s snow-covered streetscape lined with historic buildings.

The snowy scenery of Otaru viewed from the best seats

Otaru Canal is a place brimming with exotic charm, lined with historic structures such as imposing timber-framed stone warehouses. This programme takes place after sunset, when gas lamps illuminate the canal. The scene woven by snow-covered historic buildings and the warm glow of gas lamps offers a fantastical beauty unique to winter.

Furthermore, until January, you can view the “Blue Canal”, illuminated in blue light, from the prime vantage point aboard a boat. Particularly during the blue hour after sunset, the interplay of the azure sky and the blue illumination creates an exceptionally romantic scene.

A special Rutao confectionery has arrived, capturing the snowy scenery of Otaru as seen from aboard a ship.

On board, we serve a special sweet developed exclusively for this programme by Otaru Western Confectionery Shop LeTAO. This sweet reimagines LeTAO Patisserie’s popular “Mini Venice Rendezvous (Chocolat)”, capturing the view of Otaru’s streetscape seen from the ship.

Cream and icing sugar depict a town blanketed in snow, while gold leaf evokes the gas lamps illuminating Otaru Canal at night. Furthermore, we serve LeTAO’s original blend tea, ‘Scent of Otaru’, inspired by the city’s retro streetscape. Savour these sweets whilst gazing upon Otaru’s townscape, enjoying an elegant moment.

Eighty Years After the War: A Reflection on the Preciousness of Ordinary Life YUKIKAZE – In Theaters Nationwide from August 15, 2025

“To Return Alive, To Bring Others Home Alive”

Opening nationwide on August 15, 2025—marking eighty years since the end of World War II—YUKIKAZE is a feature film based on the true story of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) destroyer Yukikaze, a vessel that rescued countless lives amid the horrors of war. A press screening was held in advance at the Sony Pictures screening room.

The destroyer Yukikaze, which served throughout the Pacific War, was renowned for rescuing numerous sailors thrown into the sea during fierce naval battles, surviving to the end of the war virtually unscathed. It earned the legendary moniker “the lucky ship.” This film brings to life the ship’s heroic journey, alongside the lives of those who persevered through one of the most turbulent eras in modern history.

Leading the cast is Yutaka Takenouchi as Captain Kazutoshi Terasawa—a fictional amalgamation inspired by the real-life captains of Yukikaze. Hiroshi Tamaki portrays Petty Officer First Class Kohei Hayase. Supporting roles are delivered by an ensemble of acclaimed actors including Daiken Okudaira, Rena Tanaka, Kanji Ishimaru, and Toru Masuoka. Kiichi Nakai delivers a commanding performance as Vice Admiral Seiichi Itō, the Second Fleet Commander of the IJN who met his fate aboard the battleship Yamato.

In today’s world, once again shaken by division and violence, YUKIKAZE poses an urgent question to those of us living in the peace that others fought to protect: Are we once again treading the path of past mistakes? As collective memory of the war fades, this film becomes ever more vital—a call to reflect on the true value of peace.
