Beginning in 1989 (Heisei 1), this event has long adorned spring at Heian Jingu Shrine. Entering the Reiwa era, it embarks on a new chapter from 2023 as ‘Heian Jingu Sakura Otoyo’. In 2026, it will be held over five days from Wednesday 1st to Sunday 5th April.
In 1989, to commemorate the 1200th anniversary of the founding of Heian-kyō, the Kyoto Shimbun launched the “Red Weeping Cherry Concert” at the sacred venue of Heian Shrine. This special occasion, where the graceful red weeping cherry blossoms resonate with elegant music, continues to be cherished as a beloved seasonal tradition colouring springtime Kyoto, thanks to the tremendous cooperation received from various quarters.
After a three-year hiatus due to the novel coronavirus, the event was relaunched in 2023 under the new name “Sakura Oto Yoru” (Cherry Blossom Sound Night), returning with enhanced appeal. Immerse yourself in the fantastical cherry blossoms and the magnificent scenery of Heian-kyō, leaving the clamour of daily life behind to enjoy a moment of profound tranquillity.
