“KUU Chocolate Cake Shop” in Ibaraki Prefecture, “Gateau Chocolate” with rich taste and surprisingly light weight

2021.02.15

Maeno Co., Ltd., a long-established dry goods store founded in Ishioka City, Ibaraki Prefecture in 1880, provides sweets that make people happy based on its management philosophy of “providing a scene of happy and full-hearted smiles.” “KUU Pastry Shop” was grand-opened on January 21, 2021.

Very popular from pre-opening

A pre-opening was held on January 16th, inviting the local people of Ishioka City who are indebted to us on a daily basis. Customers came all the time from the opening of the store, and the planned number of cakes became more and more from the morning. Even if I make additional ones and line them up, the showcase is empty at 15:00. Feeling everyone’s expectations, it was a nice pre-opening.

Not only not sweet, KUU pastry shop cake

The secret of the deliciousness of the KUU pastry shop is that it is made by reducing the amount of flour and sugar to the limit. Our proud gateau chocolate is gluten-free. No flour is used.

The simpler the product, the more different it will be. We will reduce sugar by enhancing the original flavor of the ingredients and provide safe, secure and healthy sweets without using sweeteners. If you reduce the amount of flour and sugar, the balance of sweets tends to be lost, but the pastry chef selects the recipe and ingredients for each cake by trial and error to create a fragrant and flavorful taste. It’s a cake that is both delicious and gentle on the body, and makes you want to reach out.

Gluten-free gateau chocolate that gained popularity through tasting

At first, the gateau chocolate that didn’t sell well in the showcase. Slim gateaus aren’t as familiar as pound cakes. However, in fact, it is a self-confident work of the shop.

Generally, rich gateau chocolate has the impression that it is delicious but heavy. However, KUU’s Gateau is gluten-free and does not use flour. The dough is made from meringue, so it’s light enough to disappear when you put it in your mouth. I was surprised that it disappeared quickly even though it was rich, and I thought that its deliciousness should be understood if you eat it.

If you actually put it out for tasting, many recommended customers will decide to purchase it immediately. It became a product that people could recommend, “You should definitely buy gateau chocolate,” and it became so popular that one in four people would buy it in the first week of opening. It has a modest sweetness and goes well with coffee and alcohol. It is also recommended for Valentine’s gifts and your own reward sweets.

Eighty Years After the War: A Reflection on the Preciousness of Ordinary Life YUKIKAZE – In Theaters Nationwide from August 15, 2025

“To Return Alive, To Bring Others Home Alive”

Opening nationwide on August 15, 2025—marking eighty years since the end of World War II—YUKIKAZE is a feature film based on the true story of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) destroyer Yukikaze, a vessel that rescued countless lives amid the horrors of war. A press screening was held in advance at the Sony Pictures screening room.

The destroyer Yukikaze, which served throughout the Pacific War, was renowned for rescuing numerous sailors thrown into the sea during fierce naval battles, surviving to the end of the war virtually unscathed. It earned the legendary moniker “the lucky ship.” This film brings to life the ship’s heroic journey, alongside the lives of those who persevered through one of the most turbulent eras in modern history.

Leading the cast is Yutaka Takenouchi as Captain Kazutoshi Terasawa—a fictional amalgamation inspired by the real-life captains of Yukikaze. Hiroshi Tamaki portrays Petty Officer First Class Kohei Hayase. Supporting roles are delivered by an ensemble of acclaimed actors including Daiken Okudaira, Rena Tanaka, Kanji Ishimaru, and Toru Masuoka. Kiichi Nakai delivers a commanding performance as Vice Admiral Seiichi Itō, the Second Fleet Commander of the IJN who met his fate aboard the battleship Yamato.

In today’s world, once again shaken by division and violence, YUKIKAZE poses an urgent question to those of us living in the peace that others fought to protect: Are we once again treading the path of past mistakes? As collective memory of the war fades, this film becomes ever more vital—a call to reflect on the true value of peace.
