A Special Recipe Curated by Asako Harada: A ‘Premium Shaved Ice’ Collection to Celebrate Summer in Shonan

2026.06.22

SCAPES THE SUITE, a hotel in Hayama, Kanagawa Prefecture, has now opened bookings for its annual shaved ice, which is always a hit.
Three new flavours have been introduced, including the ‘Shonan Gold & Watermelon Shaved Ice’, produced by the ‘Queen of Shaved Ice’, Asako Harada. Each has been crafted into a sublime treat, perfectly suited to a seaside resort hotel. Please indulge to your heart’s content in these special, refreshing sweets, best enjoyed whilst taking in the sea breeze.

Shonan Gold & Watermelon Shaved Ice

We have crafted a shaved ice sauce using ‘Shonan Gold’, a variety renowned for its exquisite balance of sweetness and tartness. Combined with watermelon, which is widely grown on the Miura Peninsula, this creates a refreshing treat. Accented with the creaminess of almond cream, we have created a shaved ice experience full of new discoveries. Available exclusively in July, we are serving shaved ice made with ‘Miura Watermelon’, which is in season at this time of year (other varieties will be served during other periods).

Coffee Tiramisu Shaved Ice

A treat made with a generous helping of coffee from ‘Hayama Inuit Coffee Roaster’. The bitterness of the coffee and the sweetness of the mascarpone and condensed milk combine to create a sophisticated flavour. Hidden inside are coffee jelly and chocolate ice cream, ensuring the taste evolves right to the very last bite.

The coffee served with this set is made from beans specially selected to complement the shaved ice. Please enjoy the exquisite pairing. (Pairing Coffee: Inuit Coffee Drip – Brazilian)

Takanashi Tea Garden Yabukita Japanese Black Tea & Peach Shaved Ice

A dish made with generous amounts of Takanashi Tea Garden’s ‘Yabukita Japanese Black Tea’. This Japanese black tea, which brings out the unique sweetness of Japanese tea leaves, has little astringency and offers a refreshing taste. The shaved ice is adorned with a fragrant red peach sauce and a white peach and mint espuma. It is a luxurious shaved ice treat that will captivate you with its appearance, aroma and texture.

The accompanying drink in this set is also a Japanese black tea from Takanashi Tea Garden. Please savour the rich flavour of this tea garden, which has been in operation in Hadano City for over 70 years.

Asako Harada

Known as the ‘Queen of Shaved Ice’, she is a shaved ice enthusiast who has appeared on the TBS series ‘Matsuko’s Unknown World’. She became hooked on shaved ice around 20 years ago after tasting authentic matcha shaved ice in Kyoto. Whilst working as a writer for fashion magazines and at a property development company, she saved up and, in 2016, opened her long-awaited shaved ice shop, ‘Housha mamatoko’. She continues to research and enjoy shaved ice every day.

Eighty Years After the War: A Reflection on the Preciousness of Ordinary Life YUKIKAZE – In Theaters Nationwide from August 15, 2025

“To Return Alive, To Bring Others Home Alive”

Opening nationwide on August 15, 2025—marking eighty years since the end of World War II—YUKIKAZE is a feature film based on the true story of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) destroyer Yukikaze, a vessel that rescued countless lives amid the horrors of war. A press screening was held in advance at the Sony Pictures screening room.

The destroyer Yukikaze, which served throughout the Pacific War, was renowned for rescuing numerous sailors thrown into the sea during fierce naval battles, surviving to the end of the war virtually unscathed. It earned the legendary moniker “the lucky ship.” This film brings to life the ship’s heroic journey, alongside the lives of those who persevered through one of the most turbulent eras in modern history.

Leading the cast is Yutaka Takenouchi as Captain Kazutoshi Terasawa—a fictional amalgamation inspired by the real-life captains of Yukikaze. Hiroshi Tamaki portrays Petty Officer First Class Kohei Hayase. Supporting roles are delivered by an ensemble of acclaimed actors including Daiken Okudaira, Rena Tanaka, Kanji Ishimaru, and Toru Masuoka. Kiichi Nakai delivers a commanding performance as Vice Admiral Seiichi Itō, the Second Fleet Commander of the IJN who met his fate aboard the battleship Yamato.

In today’s world, once again shaken by division and violence, YUKIKAZE poses an urgent question to those of us living in the peace that others fought to protect: Are we once again treading the path of past mistakes? As collective memory of the war fades, this film becomes ever more vital—a call to reflect on the true value of peace.
