“Rime Terrace” with a spectacular view of the snowy mountains

2020.11.15

Hoshino Resort Tomamu, one of the largest stay-type snow resorts in Hokkaido, will open the “Rime Terrace” from December 1, 2020 to February 28, 2021. This is a terrace where you can appreciate the phenomenon of “rime ice”, in which moisture and fog in the air adhere to trees at about 2 to 10 degrees below freezing, and you can enjoy a superb view of the snowy mountains.
Here you can also enjoy sweets and hot cocktails inspired by hoarfrost. Also, from December 1st to 25th, there will be a nighttime “rime ice light up” for a limited time.

What is "Rime Terrace"?

The Rime Terrace is located at an altitude of 1,088 meters on Mt. Tomamu, and you can enjoy the spectacular view created by the rime on the trees.

The image of a ski resort is that it is a place only for skiers, but at this resort, we open the rime terrace because we want people who do not ski to know the beauty of the snowy mountains. It is an observatory spot where you can easily enjoy a superb view as you can get on the gondola and access it in about 13 minutes.

The night rime illumination that started in 2017 shows a fantastic view of the white rime trees that emerge under the light, which is different from the daytime.

Corona measures at "Rime Terrace"

・ Wear a mask when serving customers
・ Thorough management of staff health and hygiene (temperature measurement and record confirmation before going to work)
・ Alcohol for disinfection is installed in various places on the hoarfrost terrace.
・ Opening of gondola ventilation openings and windows
・ Limitation on the number of people in places where congestion is confirmed

Rime Terrace 3 points

1 Enjoy the spectacular view of the snowy mountains surrounded by hoarfrost

The white snowy mountains surrounded by the blue sky and hoarfrost on a clear and sunny day are spectacular views unique to cold regions. In the morning when the temperature is low, the moisture in the air freezes and the sun shines, and you can see the glittering diamond dust, so you can enjoy the spectacular view of the hoarfrost even more. The probability of this hoarfrost is about 58% (* 1), and you can enjoy it with a high probability throughout the season.
* 1 Average rate of hoarfrost on the hoarfrost terrace (according to our resort survey in 2019/20)

2 Cocktails and sweets to enjoy on the rime terrace [Power Up]

On the rime terrace, we offer an original “rime cocktail” that expresses the scenery of the rime spreading over the trees in the mountains.

This is a hot cocktail that combines white chocolate liqueur with fresh cream and Bourbon vanilla with “Tomam milk” (* 2). Melt white chocolate with a snowflake motif and drink. It features a smooth mouthfeel and sweetness that melts.

In addition, we will offer “Rime Roll Cake”, an original sweet of Rime Terrace. This roll cake is a sweet that imagines a snowy landscape with hoarfrost. Amezaiku, Alazan, coconut powder, etc. are used to express the sparkle of hoarfrost.

It is recommended to enjoy the spectacular view of the snowy mountains while enjoying cocktails and sweets with the motif of hoarfrost.
* 2 Milk from grazing cows in the farm area of the resort.

3 Illumination of hoarfrost at night

For a limited time, the trees around the observation spots “Cloud Walk” and “Cloud Bar” on the rime terrace will be lit up.

The sight of the hoarfrost lit by the light and the entire white trees emerging is a spectacular view that can only be seen at night. On nights when the temperature is so cold that the water in the air freezes, you can also see the glittering diamond dust through the gaps between the illuminated trees. You can enjoy the beauty of hoarfrost that is different from the daytime.

Eighty Years After the War: A Reflection on the Preciousness of Ordinary Life YUKIKAZE – In Theaters Nationwide from August 15, 2025

“To Return Alive, To Bring Others Home Alive”

Opening nationwide on August 15, 2025—marking eighty years since the end of World War II—YUKIKAZE is a feature film based on the true story of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) destroyer Yukikaze, a vessel that rescued countless lives amid the horrors of war. A press screening was held in advance at the Sony Pictures screening room.

The destroyer Yukikaze, which served throughout the Pacific War, was renowned for rescuing numerous sailors thrown into the sea during fierce naval battles, surviving to the end of the war virtually unscathed. It earned the legendary moniker “the lucky ship.” This film brings to life the ship’s heroic journey, alongside the lives of those who persevered through one of the most turbulent eras in modern history.

Leading the cast is Yutaka Takenouchi as Captain Kazutoshi Terasawa—a fictional amalgamation inspired by the real-life captains of Yukikaze. Hiroshi Tamaki portrays Petty Officer First Class Kohei Hayase. Supporting roles are delivered by an ensemble of acclaimed actors including Daiken Okudaira, Rena Tanaka, Kanji Ishimaru, and Toru Masuoka. Kiichi Nakai delivers a commanding performance as Vice Admiral Seiichi Itō, the Second Fleet Commander of the IJN who met his fate aboard the battleship Yamato.

In today’s world, once again shaken by division and violence, YUKIKAZE poses an urgent question to those of us living in the peace that others fought to protect: Are we once again treading the path of past mistakes? As collective memory of the war fades, this film becomes ever more vital—a call to reflect on the true value of peace.
