“Mayagusuku Waterfall Trekking” to go to the innermost waterfall on Iriomote Island because it is winter

2021.02.23

At the resort “Hoshino Resort Iriomotejima Hotel” located in Iriomote Ishigaki National Park, from December 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021, go to the waterfall at the back of Iriomote Island. We are conducting a “Mayagusuku Waterfall Trekking” tour that you can go to. The goal of this trek is “Maya (cat) Gusuku (castle) waterfall” located in the center of Iriomote Island. Since summer is hot and harsh, you can experience trekking to “Mayagusuku Waterfall”, which is difficult to reach, because it is a cool winter.

In the summer, the maximum temperature of Iriomote Island rises to about 33 ° C, and long-distance trekking requires physical strength, but from December to March, the average temperature is about 20 ° C, and the sunlight is soft and trekking. It’s the best season. It takes 6 hours for an adult to make a round trip from the Urauchi River Gunkaniwa, which is the starting point, to the Mayagusk Waterfall, which is located in the center of the island.

In addition, the amount of water increases due to heavy rainfall in winter, and the Mayagusk waterfall becomes an even more spectacular waterfall. At the Iriomote Island Hotel, we planned this tour as one of the jungle experiences that can be enjoyed only in winter.

You can see rare animals and plants that do not live in Honshu

Iriomote Island, which is aiming to be registered as a World Natural Heritage Site, is home to so many rare creatures that it is called the “Galapagos of the East”. As you walk through the subtropical virgin forest, you may forget that this is Japan.

Rare animals such as the Chinese box turtle, Kishinoue’s lizard, and Kinobori lizard, and plants that do not grow in Honshu, such as Satakentia lichen and Heritiera littoralis, can be seen. The accompanying guide explains rare animals and plants, so you can enjoy it even if you do not have knowledge of animals and plants.

Unexplored "Mayagusuku Waterfall" that can be climbed to the top

The stratum of the waterfall, which looks like a castle wall, and the water flowing down while spreading in a fan shape on the stepped slope are the most beautiful of the many waterfalls on Iriomote Island. Since the stratum of the waterfall is carved in steps, it is also a feature of this waterfall that you can climb to the top in the spray. You can overlook the jungle from the top of the waterfall with a head of 10m.

Jungle rice in a place where you can see the waterfall

Jungle rice, which you can eat while looking at the Mayagsk waterfall, is a lunch box of “Onigirizu” with miso, fried chicken, and omelet with sea lettuce sandwiched between black purple rice. In addition, the guide will boil water and pour it into the dripper to brew coffee. It is a luxurious time that you can not get in everyday life while you are in front of the powerful waterfall.
