At “Hoshino Resort Aomoriya”, from April 1st to May 31st, 2022, we will hold a fantastic view of cherry blossoms and Tsugaru Vidro’s floating balls, “Sakurakari no Yu”.
Spring, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, means that we have survived the harsh winter, and it is a season of special joy for the people of Aomori. Please feel the feelings of the people of Aomori who are pleased with the arrival of spring while watching the cherry blossoms in the open-air bath that expresses the nature of Aomori.

One cherry tree in full bloom created by the technique of Nebuta

During the implementation period, in order to realize the cherry blossoms in full bloom every day, we made cherry blossoms using the Nebuta technique using Japanese paper and wire. Nebuta is shaped with wire to the parts of the face, fingers, and even the finest parts of the nails.

Utilizing this technology, each petal is shaped with wire and Japanese paper to make a single flower and attached to the branch. If you pay close attention to the details of the cherry blossoms while soaking in hot water, you can feel the Nebuta technique that the people of Aomori have inherited.

Floating ball of "Tsugaru Vidro", a traditional craft that colors the surface of the water in cherry blossoms

Tsugaru Vidro is a glass craft that has a history of manufacturing floating balls for fishing. When soaking in hot water, I made a floating ball with a color that resembles a cherry blossom so that you can think of spring even if you look at the water surface of the pond, which is the closest to your viewpoint.

During the day, the appearance of floating on the water looks like a flower raft, and at night, the light of the floating ball reflects on the surface of the water, further enhancing the scenery of the cherry blossoms at night.

Tradition of floating ball manufacturing technology

The factory that produces Tsugaru Vidro has a history of boasting the top share in Japan for glass floating balls for fishing. It is a technique called “chubuki” that blows air, and skillful technique is required to inflate it to a size of about 30 cm.

Currently, plastic floating balls are the mainstream, and there are few opportunities to manufacture with glass, and even at the Tsugaru Vidro factory, only two craftsmen have the technology to manufacture floating balls. The production of more than 100 floating balls used this time was an opportunity to pass on the technique from two veteran craftsmen to two young craftsmen.
