About Shojoshinin

Mt. Koya Shingon sect special head temple. Chief priest Ekan Ikeguchi.
It was created by Kobo Daishi Takaso during the Tencho era (824-34).

During the Tokugawa period, various daimyo such as Sangoishi, Kenshin Uesugi, and Yoshinobu Satake became the Danish family. It has a deep connection and serves as a prayer place for Kenshin Uesugi and a bodhisattva for the Satake clan. The Kenshin Uesugi Reiya Building (National Important Cultural Property) in Okunoin is managed by this hospital.

It is said that the statue of Gohonzon Daishi was sculpted by Kobo Daishi on March 20th, the second year of Jōwa (835), with the word “Miunkan” written behind the statue. It is transmitted.
In the precincts, there are the statue of Amida Nyorai made by Unkei, the nine-article mandala written by Chujohime, and the Taima mandala (important cultural property), and the famous wooden umbrella cherry blossoms in the gate are also one of the highlights. There is also an anecdote that Toyotomi Hideyoshi Taiko held a cherry blossom viewing in this umbrella cherry tree.

As its name suggests, our hospital still retains the architectural style that is said to have served as a reference for Kongobuji, the head temple, such as the cleanliness, simplicity and elegance, and the kitchen with the traditional cauldron of Mt. Koya.
