From November 5 (Sat.) to 21 (Mon.), 2022, Nittodo will hold “Beyond Handicrafts” an exhibition and sale of works by Japanese craftspeople.
This is the seventh time that “Beyond Handicrafts” has been held since its inception in November 2021. Many visitors have enjoyed the past events because they can hold in their hands unique works of craftsmanship, check the texture, and purchase the pieces they like. We plan to hold this event on an irregular basis in the future.
Based on the concept of “Japanese arts and tools,” Nittodo handles tools that carefully support daily life, focusing on Japanese technical skills. The exhibition and sales event will feature the works of two future leaders of “Japanese arts and tools,” ceramic artist Toru Kikuchi and woodworker Tomohito Funaki, in the multi-purpose space on the second floor.
The changes that lead up to the completion of the vessel can be enjoyed in minute details, such as the rotation by the potter’s wheel, the softly molten glaze, and the speed felt in the brushstrokes. The matte, lusterless white glaze and the shiny silver texture applied to the interior radiate a moderate tension.
The jet-black color and the gentle light reflected on the rough surface give a calm impression. Contrary to its massive appearance, it has a lightness that is typical of wooden works carved by a woodworker’s wheel.
