Hoshinoya Kyoto, an all-room river view inn in Arashiyama, Kyoto Prefecture, will hold the Oku-Arashiyama Firefly Hunt from 7 to 9 and 14 to 16 June 2024 to commemorate the light of fireflies, which were also loved by the Heian aristocracy. The event will take place along the Oigawa River, which flows just outside Hoshinoya Kyoto, where visitors can enjoy the fleeting glow of fireflies with lanterns shaped like firefly baskets.
Firefly hunting, a pastime enjoyed by the aristocrats of the Heian period, offers a taste of summer evenings.
The Oigam River, which flows in front of Hoshinoya Kyoto, is a picturesque place where Heian aristocrats used to have their villas and admire the seasonal scenery. We will take you to the secret firefly habitat along the Oigam River, known only to the staff of Hoshinoya Kyoto.

After admiring the fireflies, visitors can taste red shiso shibori in the facility’s water garden. Enjoy a refreshingly fragrant, tart and refreshing special drink in the Water Garden, where you can hear the cool sound of the waterfall.

Through the narration of “Hotaru” from The Tale of Genji translated into modern Kyoto dialect, the audience is introduced to the world of The Tale of Genji, which has been read for over 1,000 years.
