Hotel Gajoen Tokyo, a museum hotel of Japanese beauty, is holding “Japanese Light x Hyakudan Staircase 2024 – Yokubi Naotogibari” at the Hyakudan Staircase, a tangible cultural property designated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, from 5 July (Fri) to 23 September (Mon) 2024 (holidays).
The exhibition has already attracted more than 20,000 visitors due to its elaborate storytelling, which draws visitors into the world of fairy tales. The exhibition is also popular for its fantastic photo opportunities and we will show you the most popular exhibits with visitors and how to enjoy the exhibition.
Carp waterfall climb - Legend of the climbing dragon gate - (Grass Hill Room).
The legend that the carp that pass through the Dragon’s Gate of the rapids become dragons is represented in paper craft, ikebana and ink painting in the Soka no Ma. Colourful carp shimmer and sway as they make their way to the ikebana, which is made to look like a splashing waterfall or a raging torrent.
If you look towards the back of the room, you will see a dragon emerging from the stormy sea and heading towards the heavens. The branches hanging over the ink painting look like thunder, and the story is completed by the integration of various sensibilities and spaces.
Taketori Monogatari (The Tale of the Bamboo-Cutter) (Between Ten Rows)
The world of the moon and shimmering bamboo grove of made-washi paper unfolds in the Ten-Pointed Room, inspired by the Taketori Monogatari (The Tale of the Bamboo-Cutter). As soon as you step into the hall, the breathtaking beauty will instantly immerse you in the world of fairy tales.
Fairy tales on scrolls / Fairy tale entrance (entrance hall - promenade).
-A set of scrolls was found in the side room of the Garo Inn, which opened in 1935. The scrolls contain mysterious stories that took place at the former Garo inn in the late Edo period – this is the beginning of the theme of this exhibition, “Yobi-No-Togiri Monogatari”.
The well-crafted story setting heightens the anticipation of the stories to come.
