The Hotel Seiryu Kyoto Shimizu was once a primary school. The building has been carefully preserved and utilised to transform it into a hotel offering a luxurious experience for guests from home and abroad.
The hotel’s space, which combines modern comforts with the memory of a learning centre, resonates deeply with the spirit of kintsugi, the art of creating new values while utilising the good old ones. Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese technique for restoring broken or chipped ceramics and porcelain using lacquer and gold powder.
It does not simply restore broken objects to their original state, but also beautifully decorates their seams, creating new value and appeal while making use of what is no longer usable.
Primary school built in 1933.
Based on the similarities between the two, this event has been organised with the hope that visitors will experience the joy of finding new beauty in old things and the moment when broken things are given a new lease of life.
At this one-day event, a kintsugi (metal-jointing) instructor with a shop in Kyoto will be invited to create “kintsugi accessories” using broken or chipped ceramics. Enjoy the moment when new beauty is born from old things in this special space.
