[Hoshinoya Tokyo] Experience the tradition of cooling off that dates back to the Edo period: a modern retreat for a summer stay

2026.05.08

Hoshinoya Tokyo, a Japanese ryokan housed in a tower that continues to evolve with the times, is offering a summer stay that weaves Edo-era wisdom into the modern day, from Monday 1 June to Monday 31 August 2026.

A Seasonal Welcome

As you step away from the hustle and bustle of the office district, you are enveloped by the cool, refreshing air created by the sprinkling of water on the pavement. Upon passing through the Aomori cypress door at the entrance, you will find a seasonal arrangement on the veranda ahead, featuring vibrant flowers such as hydrangeas and summer hazel, offering a visual respite from the heat. In the tea lounge, we serve sencha green tea and seasonal sweets. Stretching out on the tatami mats, you can forget the heat of the city and let your mind settle into tranquillity; this is the perfect spot to mark the beginning of your stay.

*Please note that the flowers used in the seasonal arrangements are subject to change depending on availability.

‘Fermented Shaved Ice’ to enjoy after a bath

After relaxing your body in the natural hot spring water that wells up from deep underground, head straight to the tea lounge in your bathrobe. Here, you can enjoy ‘fermented shaved ice’, a modern interpretation of Edo-period wisdom. We have combined the rich sweetness of seasonal fruits with fermented foods such as amazake, doburoku and mirin, which were once popular for beating the summer heat. Listening to the soothing sound of melting ice, you can hydrate your body from within in a space brimming with privacy – a luxurious summer experience unique to a traditional Japanese ryokan.

Period: 3 June – 31 August 2026
Times: 16:00 / 16:30 / 17:00
Price: 4,840 yen per serving (including tax and service charge; accommodation not included)
Capacity: Limited to 10 servings per day

A ‘moment of indulgence’ before dinner

As dusk falls and dinner approaches, take a moment to quench your thirst with the refreshing flavours so beloved by the people of Edo. The star of the show is a deeply flavourful chilled soup made with ‘white melon’, a vegetable highly prized during the Edo period. To accompany it, we recommend not only sake but also ‘Hon-naoshi’, a traditional Edo-era liqueur made by blending mirin with shochu. The refreshing texture of the white melon and the crisp, chilled flavour of the Hon-naoshi provide a delightful sensation on a summer evening. It is a sophisticated way for adults to enjoy the start of the evening in cool comfort, whilst reflecting on the history and culture of Edo.

‘Seasonal Miniature Garden’ – Capturing the Seasons

Before departure, following the horticultural traditions of Edo, you will immerse yourself in creating your own ‘miniature garden’ that expresses the coolness of summer. Within a paulownia wood box, you will recreate the scene of deep green moss bathed in gentle rain and clear water flowing between rocks. As you touch the stones and moss, gently reflecting the essence of nature within this small miniature garden, you will find a sense of calm and coolness wash over you. This creative experience, held in the heart of the city, is the perfect way to round off your stay at a traditional Japanese ryokan whilst cherishing the changing seasons.

Eighty Years After the War: A Reflection on the Preciousness of Ordinary Life YUKIKAZE – In Theaters Nationwide from August 15, 2025

“To Return Alive, To Bring Others Home Alive”

Opening nationwide on August 15, 2025—marking eighty years since the end of World War II—YUKIKAZE is a feature film based on the true story of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) destroyer Yukikaze, a vessel that rescued countless lives amid the horrors of war. A press screening was held in advance at the Sony Pictures screening room.

The destroyer Yukikaze, which served throughout the Pacific War, was renowned for rescuing numerous sailors thrown into the sea during fierce naval battles, surviving to the end of the war virtually unscathed. It earned the legendary moniker “the lucky ship.” This film brings to life the ship’s heroic journey, alongside the lives of those who persevered through one of the most turbulent eras in modern history.

Leading the cast is Yutaka Takenouchi as Captain Kazutoshi Terasawa—a fictional amalgamation inspired by the real-life captains of Yukikaze. Hiroshi Tamaki portrays Petty Officer First Class Kohei Hayase. Supporting roles are delivered by an ensemble of acclaimed actors including Daiken Okudaira, Rena Tanaka, Kanji Ishimaru, and Toru Masuoka. Kiichi Nakai delivers a commanding performance as Vice Admiral Seiichi Itō, the Second Fleet Commander of the IJN who met his fate aboard the battleship Yamato.

In today’s world, once again shaken by division and violence, YUKIKAZE poses an urgent question to those of us living in the peace that others fought to protect: Are we once again treading the path of past mistakes? As collective memory of the war fades, this film becomes ever more vital—a call to reflect on the true value of peace.
