Kyushu Railway Company will open ‘THE STATION HOTEL BEPPU 1911’ (hereinafter ‘BEPPU 1911’), an accommodation facility comprising the entire renovated station building at Higashi-Beppu Station (Beppu City, Oita Prefecture) on the Nippo Main Line, around spring 2027.
JR Kyushu is rolling out ‘ekinico’ across Kyushu—an initiative that aims to create sustainable ‘vibrancy at stations’ by utilising the spaces within station buildings, which are gradually losing their liveliness, in collaboration with local communities. Higashi-Beppu Station, which opened in Meiji 44 (1911), is situated in the hot spring district of Hamawaki Onsen—one of the ‘Eight Hot Springs of Beppu’—and its wooden station building, which retains its original appearance from the time of its opening, has been designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Beppu City.
We are now renovating this station building to serve as a self-contained accommodation facility and will reopen it as a ‘station where you can stay’. Ahead of the opening, a teaser website will go live on 25 September 2026.
Taking the historic station building into the next hundred years
The Hamawaki area, where the station building is located, is said to be the birthplace of Beppu Onsen and has flourished as a hot spring resort since ancient times. The neighbourhood still retains traditional terraced houses and winding alleyways, exuding a nostalgic atmosphere where the hot springs are an integral part of daily life. At ‘BEPPU 1911’, we plan to organise tours and experiential programmes that allow guests to enjoy Beppu’s art scene and explore the town, whilst working in partnership with the local community. We aim to create an accommodation where guests can experience the charm of both the station building and the town during their stay.
An entire building available for exclusive hire, limited to one group per day
The former station office, which remains within the station building, has been converted into accommodation, whilst a new annexe has been built on the grounds, featuring a bathroom with a view of the garden. In guest rooms where the original wooden pillars and sliding doors from the time of construction remain, guests can experience a unique atmosphere—feeling the presence of passing trains—that can only be enjoyed by staying at a working station.
