For a limited period from Saturday 19 September 2026 to Monday 30 November 2026, the ‘Yaesu-Nikko Line’—a direct express bus service linking Tokyo Yaesu Bus Terminal with the resort—will commence operation. The service launches on the first day of ‘Silver Week’, the first five-day holiday period in 11 years. This initiative aims to remove the ‘access barrier’ for residents of the Greater Tokyo Area and international visitors. Tickets will be available for purchase on KKday.
Overcoming the ‘transfer barrier’ between Tokyo and Nikko Edo Villag
In recent years, interest in samurai, ninjas and Edo culture has been growing overseas through films, television dramas and video games, and there is an increasing demand amongst visitors to Japan to ‘experience Japan’s history and traditional culture’. Edo Wonderland Nikko Edo Village, which recreates the streetscape of the Edo period and allows visitors to experience the lifestyle and culture of that era first-hand, is one of the few facilities that caters to this interest.
Tourist demand in the Nikko area is also on the rise; in 2025, the total number of overnight stays by foreign visitors in Tochigi Prefecture reached a record high of 328,000, with Nikko City accounting for 183,000 of these—more than 50 per cent of the prefecture’s total. However, as there was no direct transport link from Tokyo Station to Nikko Edo Village, requiring a transfer between trains and local buses, the decision was taken to introduce a direct bus service.
