YOSHIKIMONO selected for Victoria & Albert Museum Kimono Exhibition

2020.04.12

YOSHIKI’s innovative kimono brand YOSHIKIMONO has been selected as the exhibition work for the first large kimono exhibition in Europe, Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk, to be held from February 29 at the Victoria & Albert Museum (V & A) in London.

Works exhibited at “Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo 2016 S / S” will be exhibited (see attached photo). Other well-known fashion designers, such as Alexander McQueen, Yves Saint Laurent, Jean-Paul Gaultier and John Galliano, are on hand.

Kimono is often regarded as the ultimate symbol of Japan that is traditional, timeless and invariant, but Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk is as dynamic and always as if it overturns this concept. Featured as an evolving fashion icon.

“YOSHIKI has brought a new breeze to the world of kimono by making use of his rock and roll sense. I am very excited to be able to exhibit his work,” said Anna Jackson, the curator of Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk. In particular, I think that the innovative styling adopted by YOSHIKIMONO will show how diverse the style of kimono can be. ”

Other highlights at this exhibition include kimonos designed by Kunihiko Moriguchi, a living national treasure, Alexander McQueen’s costumes worn by singer Bjork on the album ‘Homogenic’ jacket, and Hollywood movie ‘SAYURI’ costumes. Also on display will be “Star Wars” costumes based on kimonos by John Morro and Trisha Bigger.

YOSHIKI, born as the eldest son of a kimono shop and choosing a career in music instead of taking over the family business, commented:
“I am honored to participate in this exhibition. Of course, my brand YOSHIKIMONO has been selected, but I am grateful that the whole kimono industry is in the spotlight. I want to keep that tradition and at the same time break the rules that the industry has created and locked in its territory. “

YOSHIKIMONO brilliantly celebrated the opening at the “Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO 2020 S / S” held last year and showed a touching stage showing the new possibilities of traditional kimono in today’s fashion scene. The media presented around the world have received the following praise comments on the collection.

The popularity has swept the fashion world, with YOSHIKIMONO appearing on the cover of the March issue of the fashion magazine “Numero Tokyo”. YOSHIKI is also gaining momentum as a fashion icon, and was the first Japanese man to appear on the cover of VOGUE JAPAN in 2017. At the event of Yves Saint Laurent Beaute in Tokyo in 2018, it was selected as a model of a new product (Rouge Pur Couture The Slim) by YSL beauty director Tom Pecheux and attracted attention.

When the lake is full of water, it creates a fantastic sight of white willow trees as if they are growing out of the water.
