An event likened to the spring song of Hyakunin Isshu at the Lake Biwa Hotel “Strawberry Afternoon Tea Sakuya Konohana”

2021.01.09

From January 15th (Friday) to March 28th (Sunday), 2021, only on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, the scenery of Hyakunin Isshu’s spring song will be elegantly expressed at “Italian Dining Bel Lago” on the 2nd floor. We will hold “Strawberry Afternoon Tea Sakuya Konohana”.

The Lake Biwa Hotel has been selling a series of “Hyakunin Isshu Cocktails” to commemorate the 1350th anniversary of the transfer of capital to Otsu from 2017, and held the “Hyakunin Isshu Sweets Buffet” in 2019. In 2021, we will prepare afternoon tea with the theme of Hyakunin Isshu, where you can fully enjoy seasonal strawberries. The scenery of spring songs and love songs is expressed with colorful sweets in three layers and savory arranged on a plate like a picture.

Under the supervision of “Otsu Akinota-kai”, a member of the All Japan Karuta Association, and the poet Toshiko Toyama, the shape, color, and taste of the song were elaborated after the meaning and words of the song.

We use a lot of ingredients from Shiga prefecture and pair the best Japanese tea and black tea for each menu. Limited number of groups, reservation system, individual service with spacious Lake Biwa view seats. It is an afternoon tea that is “too elegant” even in Corona, where you can enjoy a short trip to “Karuta’s Sanctuary, Otsu” safely and securely.

Karuta's sanctuary "Otsu"

Emperor Tenji, who is known for the Taika Reform and the transfer of capital to Otsu, and the author of Hyakunin Isshu’s number one song, is enshrined at Omi Jingu in Otsu City. At the Omi Kangakukan in Omi Jingu, competition karuta masters, queens, and national high school karuta championships are held every year, with athletes from all over the country aiming to be the best in Japan.

Lake Biwa Hotel has set “Respect Local” as an important theme, and is developing a unique menu so that you can experience the charm of the area and enjoy the ingredients produced in Shiga Prefecture. The title “Sakuya Konohana” received a passage from the prelude “Nambatsu ni …”, which is always sung at the start of the competitive karuta game.

Invitation to the world of Hyakunin Isshu with first dessert

[First dessert]
People don’t even know their hearts, he’s hometown flowers, and he’s fascinated by old incense / Ki no Tsurayuki
(How about you? I don’t know the hearts of people, but in my hometown, only plum blossoms give off the same good scent as before.)
The “flower” that Ki no Tsurayuki wrote in this song is a plum blossom that gives off a nice scent. In the image of red and white plums, strawberry with a fragrant red and white strawberry and a lovely strawberry-sized petit shoe are served as a greeting plate. Paired with gyokuro from Otsu / Nakagawa Seiseidou Chapo, which is carefully brewed as a welcome drink.

Savory enjoys ingredients from Shiga prefecture such as "Omi beef" and "Biwa trout"

[Savory]
Kimigatame Harunano, Tsumu Wakana, snowing on my clothes / Emperor Kouko
(It’s snowing all the time on my sleeves, going out to the spring fields and picking young vegetables to give to you.)
A song that was added when picking the seven spring herbs and giving them to a loved one. A refreshing dish using suzuna (turnip), suzushiro (radish) and strawberry vinegar contained in the seven herbs, likened to the feeling of fresh first love. Although it is bite-sized like playing with chicks, the ingredients from Shiga prefecture such as Omi beef and Biwa trout are authentic. With a petite-sized two-color scone. The pairing is “KANOKA”, a Japanese black tea with a gorgeous spring scent. Roasted black tea that goes well with both sweets and dishes.

When you open the lid of the sweets triple layer, you can see the colorful songs

[Ichinodan]
His name is Ohaba Osakayama, he is known to Sanekazura people, and he is coming Yoshimogana / Minister Sanjo Right
(It’s not Osakayama’s Kadsura, but I wish there was a way to meet you without anyone knowing)
Kadsura japonica is a plant that grows vines and bears red fruits, and its characteristics are reminiscent of strawberries and berries. In “Strawberry Mousse” and “Matcha Fore Noir”, we have trapped a taste that cannot be expected from the outside. It implies a passionate love that is hidden inside.

[Ninodan]
Hisakata’s Nodokeki, on a spring day, the flowers are scattered and Ki no Tomonori
(Why do the cherry blossoms fall restlessly on such a calm day in spring?)
“Strawberry cowhide crepe” dressed like a lovely princess, “Strawberry macaroon”, “Pistachio mousse”, etc. are put together in bright colors reminiscent of the spring sunlight.

[Minodan]
Baking people who don’t come in the evening of Matsuhonoura and longing for algae salt / Gonchu Chunagon Teika
(Like the algae salt that is roasted in the evening calm of Matsuhonoura, I am in love with people who do not come)
Inside the weight is a view of the coast at dusk. Love isn’t just sweet. The sweetness was changed with “Ganache Caramel Sale” and “Salt Chocolate Nut Cookies” that were made with high-quality salt. The crispy texture of the baked sweets in words is also attractive.

The tea to match the sweets triple layer is the Darjeeling second flash “Strawberry Moon Shine” from SEEYOK Tea Garden. It was named after the tea picking on the night of the full moon on June 6th. It’s light and refreshing, and goes great with sweets. In addition, you can freely order from about 20 kinds of drink menu such as various coffee, tea, herbal tea, tea cocktail.

Eighty Years After the War: A Reflection on the Preciousness of Ordinary Life YUKIKAZE – In Theaters Nationwide from August 15, 2025

“To Return Alive, To Bring Others Home Alive”

Opening nationwide on August 15, 2025—marking eighty years since the end of World War II—YUKIKAZE is a feature film based on the true story of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) destroyer Yukikaze, a vessel that rescued countless lives amid the horrors of war. A press screening was held in advance at the Sony Pictures screening room.

The destroyer Yukikaze, which served throughout the Pacific War, was renowned for rescuing numerous sailors thrown into the sea during fierce naval battles, surviving to the end of the war virtually unscathed. It earned the legendary moniker “the lucky ship.” This film brings to life the ship’s heroic journey, alongside the lives of those who persevered through one of the most turbulent eras in modern history.

Leading the cast is Yutaka Takenouchi as Captain Kazutoshi Terasawa—a fictional amalgamation inspired by the real-life captains of Yukikaze. Hiroshi Tamaki portrays Petty Officer First Class Kohei Hayase. Supporting roles are delivered by an ensemble of acclaimed actors including Daiken Okudaira, Rena Tanaka, Kanji Ishimaru, and Toru Masuoka. Kiichi Nakai delivers a commanding performance as Vice Admiral Seiichi Itō, the Second Fleet Commander of the IJN who met his fate aboard the battleship Yamato.

In today’s world, once again shaken by division and violence, YUKIKAZE poses an urgent question to those of us living in the peace that others fought to protect: Are we once again treading the path of past mistakes? As collective memory of the war fades, this film becomes ever more vital—a call to reflect on the true value of peace.
