Kumamoto Torrential Rain Catastrophically Damages Traditional Kuma Shochu Began selling miraculous sake

2020.08.05

Co., Ltd., which sells alcoholic beverages, Yamada Shoten / Sake Shotasen, started selling Bumazo Asahi, a sake brewed from Kuma shochu, which was safe from the Kumamoto Prefecture South Heavy Rain disaster in July of this month on July 16th, 2020. Did.

Heavy rain in Kumamoto caused a large loss of traditional Kuma shochu

Kuma Shochu, the symbol of Hitoyoshi Kuma, is in danger. The Kuma River flooded due to the heavy rains in Kumamoto Prefecture in July this year, and the Hitoyoshi Kuma region was severely damaged. Speaking of Hitoyoshi, Kumamoto’s special product Kuma shochu is famous, but most of the 27 shochu warehouses scattered in the Hitoyoshi Kuma area are devastated by this flood. Kuma Shochu is made from domestic rice only, mashed with mash (Moromi) prepared by groundwater in the Kuma district, and distilled and bottled in the Kuma district. There are many persistent fans all over the country.

The Kuma River is called the Rampage River, and there have been many hardships in shochu brewing due to water damage, but over the years, we have succeeded and inherited the tradition of 500 years. However, the 3 breweries are devastating because of the flood damage this time, not only the original sake, but also the production sites and offices. In addition, nearly half of the breweries have suffered damage from floods above and below the floor. The Kuma Shochu breweries are already working together to recover.

Shochu that miraculously escaped difficulties, a gem created by regional cooperation

Kinoshita Brewery, a small family-run shochu brewery, is located in the Hiratyoshi basin, where the Kuma River runs, and in Taragaki Town, about 20 kilometers east of Hitoyoshi City. Next to the brewery, there was a small waterway branching from the Kuma River, which miraculously escaped due to the blockage of the sluice, and all the new sake was safe. To preserve the tradition of Kuma Shochu, which is the symbol of Hitoyoshi Kuma, this year’s new shochu will be shipped with a special feeling.

The new shochu, “Bunzo Asahi,” is the raw material for the rice farm, “Motoda Farm”, the sake-making shochu “Kinoshita Brewery”, the liquor store that sells it, “Sake Shosen”, and the local liquor wholesale “Toroshie”. Shops”, each of which was small, was completed through regional cooperation. The rice uses “Asahi No. 1” called phantom rice. It is an ancestor of the popular Sasani-shiki and Koshihikari rice, and it is an original rice that has been cultivated since ancient times. There are only a few farms in Kumamoto that produce, and Motoda Farm grows with no chemicals, fertilizers and natural cultivation. In the process of making shochu, unlike mechanized and manufacturable products, the old-fashioned fermentation and aging was stored in old-fashioned jars and aged for a full year.

Sold as a pioneer in the recovery of Kuma shochu, part of the sales goes to support money

Shochu, which is prepared by the atmospheric distillation method and the traditional kameboru, has a mild taste and a rich taste. The rich richness and savory shochu peculiar to rice are finished. The product name “Bunko Asahi” is the name of the founder, “Bunko” and “Asahi”, which were sung in the famous Kokumoto folk song “Rokutone” called “Inaka Shoya Don’s Castle Visit… It was named after the first issue.

Eighty Years After the War: A Reflection on the Preciousness of Ordinary Life YUKIKAZE – In Theaters Nationwide from August 15, 2025

“To Return Alive, To Bring Others Home Alive”

Opening nationwide on August 15, 2025—marking eighty years since the end of World War II—YUKIKAZE is a feature film based on the true story of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) destroyer Yukikaze, a vessel that rescued countless lives amid the horrors of war. A press screening was held in advance at the Sony Pictures screening room.

The destroyer Yukikaze, which served throughout the Pacific War, was renowned for rescuing numerous sailors thrown into the sea during fierce naval battles, surviving to the end of the war virtually unscathed. It earned the legendary moniker “the lucky ship.” This film brings to life the ship’s heroic journey, alongside the lives of those who persevered through one of the most turbulent eras in modern history.

Leading the cast is Yutaka Takenouchi as Captain Kazutoshi Terasawa—a fictional amalgamation inspired by the real-life captains of Yukikaze. Hiroshi Tamaki portrays Petty Officer First Class Kohei Hayase. Supporting roles are delivered by an ensemble of acclaimed actors including Daiken Okudaira, Rena Tanaka, Kanji Ishimaru, and Toru Masuoka. Kiichi Nakai delivers a commanding performance as Vice Admiral Seiichi Itō, the Second Fleet Commander of the IJN who met his fate aboard the battleship Yamato.

In today’s world, once again shaken by division and violence, YUKIKAZE poses an urgent question to those of us living in the peace that others fought to protect: Are we once again treading the path of past mistakes? As collective memory of the war fades, this film becomes ever more vital—a call to reflect on the true value of peace.
