BLUE BLUE JAPAN expresses its unique worldview through products centred on indigo and store displays that capture the changing seasons in Japan. They have now released a wooden tumbler that showcases the beauty and functionality of traditional techniques and materials from the Hokuriku region, incorporating Noto hiba wood and Echizen lacquerware.
Noto hiba, a natural wood, is known for being difficult to process due to its tendency to warp. However, this product utilises the advanced turning techniques of Ishikawa Prefecture’s traditional craft, Yamanaka lacquerware, and is carefully crafted from the wood stage through to the finished product by drying it thoroughly and applying a careful finishing touch.
The finish is applied by craftsmen at a long-established lacquerware shop in Fukui Prefecture, who apply layers of lacquer by hand to create the deep, beautiful blue Echizen lacquer that is unique to OKURA.
The brand’s iconic ‘Heart in Yang’ stamp is engraved on the side, adding a subtle yet impressive accent.
