Special Exhibition “Shinjuku Nippon Meiji Pottery -Phantom Yokohama Ware / Tokyo Ware-”

Yokohama Port opened in 1859 (Ansei 6). When the modern curtain opens in Japan with the opening of the country, ceramics-related companies from all over Yokohama and Tokyo will gather and set up workshops and shops. “Yokohama ware / Tokyo ware” was born with elaborate painting and decoration for export to foreigners and overseas by ordering the base material from pottery producing areas nationwide.

The graceful and elaborate “Yokohama ware / Tokyo ware” products were introduced at the World’s Fair and received a lot of attention in Western countries. In addition, the unique design will accelerate the Japonisme (Japanese hobby) boom in Europe and the United States, and will be exported in large quantities from Yokohama Port to overseas.

Due to the nature of export products, “Yokohama ware / Tokyo ware” rarely remains in Japan and is said to be “phantom ceramics”. In this exhibition, we will introduce about 140 excellent products that exist in Japan, focusing on the homecoming works owned by Tetsuhito Tanabe, the best collector in Japan, and explore the charm of “craftsmanship” known for transcendental technique.

Many Japanese ceramics exported with the dawn of modern times were highly evaluated at the World’s Fairs in Europe and the United States for their gorgeous decoration by outstanding craftsmanship. Among them, Yokohama Port, which opened in 1859, prospered as a major center of the export pottery industry, with pottery-related companies gathering from pottery producing areas nationwide.

In this exhibition, we will introduce about 140 excellent items of Yokohama and Tokyo ware of the Meiji era that are owned by Tetsuhito Tanabe, the best collector in Japan, and explore the charm of pottery created by transcendental technique.

We are preparing a limited-time “Japanese-Western Bento with a lawn” that is based on the image of a Japanese-Western eclectic work exhibited in the special exhibition “Phantom Yokohama Yaki / Tokyo Yaki”.
