Nagoya Castle will be open to the public for 14 days from Friday, November 25, 2022, for the “Nagoya Castle Autumn Night Special Viewing Kei”. During this period, there will be special viewing of the illuminated Ninomaru Garden, the Honmaru Palace will be open to the public at night, and the “Kikuno-gorosho” in the palace will be open to the public for the first time.
Using the word “kei,” which encompasses the contrasting meanings of “light” and “shade,” the artists will compose creative scenography and performances, focusing on the changes that occur with the passage of time and the appearance of things.
Nagoya Castle Honmaru Goten was completed in 1615 as the residence of the lord of the Owari domain and the domain’s government office. The interior of the palace was lavishly decorated with painted barriers and decorative metal fittings, and was praised as a masterpiece of the early modern castle palace, with the most advanced technology of the Edo period.
However, it was destroyed by fire in an air raid in 1945. Restoration work began in 2009 and was completed in 2018 with unparalleled accuracy and fidelity. The Honmaru Goten at night is open to the public for a special viewing.
The “Jorakuden” was added to the Nagoya Castle to accommodate the third shogun, Iemitsu, on his way to Kyoto.
It is the most gorgeous and luxurious of all the Honmaru Goten buildings, and every detail of the building was lavishly decorated. This special exhibition marks the first public viewing of the “Chrysanthemum Corridor,” located on the north side of the Jorakuden “Jodan-no-Ma” (upper level hallway).
Visitors will be able to see the gold and blue paintings depicting beautiful red and white chrysanthemums and running water.
During this period, visitors can enter the “Tsugi-no-Ma” room to see the details of the people’s gestures and clothing depicted in the “Fuzoku-zu” (genre painting) at a closer distance than usual.
The creative label “PERIMETRON” will be producing the space. In order to bring out the different face of the Ninomaru Garden at night, we will focus on the characteristics of light such as reflection, transmission, scattering, refraction, and absorption, and create a space where “light” and “shade” are intertwined in various ways to amplify these characteristics.
Different views will appear like a mirage from dusk to night in the usual garden.
